What's the best ute for $10,000?

I am looking to purchase an older single cab Toyota Workmate ute as I only have about $10,000 to spend. Are there any year models that are better than others? Are there any year models that I should avoid? Are there other makes of utes in this age group that would be worth considering?

The Hilux is tempting because of its reputation for toughness and reliability; there are no particular years to avoid. The most important thing is to buy on condition, look for one that hasn’t been beaten up. Do that and you should be ok. You could also consider a Mazda BT-50 or a Mitsubishi Triton.
