Mitsubishi Lancer 2000: Does the spare tyre deteriorate with age?

I HAVE never used the spare tyre in my 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer, but was wondering if it was safe to use it now that it's eight years old, or do tyres deteriorate with age?

TYRES do deteriorate with age, but I wouldn't expect yours to have deteriorated to the point it's not suitable for use. It has been stowed in the boot out of the light, so there will be minimal deterioration.
