Mazda BT-50 2011: Cam belt breakages

With reference to Carl Humphries' enquiry (Carsguide, December 9, 2011) regarding cam belt breakages on Mazda BT-50 engines I can confirm that only recently we had the same problem on our BT-50, which is three years old and has done under 130,000 km. Our mechanic checked with Mazda dealers and other mechanics and tells us that it is a well known problem with numerous BT-50s suffering the same expensive damage.

Mazda tell us they have come across cam belt failures on the BT-50, but that it wasn't what they would refer to as a common concern, and not one they consider to have an abnormal rate of failure. From that you could deduce that it's not an unusual failure, but the failure rate isn't sufficiently high to do anything about.
