Falcon fix tip

I FEEL I can help your readers avoid the costly repairs from the failure of the Falcon auto transmission oil cooler. I have a 2002 AU and a 2004 BA Falcon, and I have bypassed the transmission coolers in the radiator and installed aftermarket coolers in both. I used Davies Craig Hydracool transmission coolers, (part No.678), suitable for 4.0-litre engines and over, so these are more than adequate for the Falcons. Mine cost about $140 each. Installation is relatively simple, once the thermo fans and grille are removed. The only problem is fitting the rubber cooler hoses over the flared ends of the steel fluid lines. This can be made easier by heating the hose ends in boiling water, making sure to give them a good couple of flicks to expel any water drops before quickly forcing them on to the lines. It is also a good idea to buy some brass plugs to plug the holes in the radiator cooler to prevent coolant loss in the event it does eventually fail.

THANKS Ross for the info on the radiator fix. We must warn that doing what Ross has done to his cars will void your new-car warranty as far as the radiator, cooling system and auto transmission is concerned. If you do plan to make the modification you need to be aware of this.
