Aston Martin Virage takes to the hills
By Mitchell Oke · 24 Mar 2011
The Virage, Italian for “turn” and “bend”, fills in the gap between the DB9 grand tourer and DBS sports car. Based on the same aluminium underpinnings as the DB9/DBS, the Virage is powered by a 365-kilowatt version of the acclaimed 6.0L V12. The engine is matched to a traditional auto box, eschewing the trend towards dual-clutch transmissions. The ZF 6-speed Touchtronic 2 is sourced from the DB9, with a limited slip diff to keep the right wheels spinning. With a price tag slightly above the DB9, the 2+2 Virage justifies the bump with tweaked styling, a new Garmin navigation system, revised suspension and steering, and, most impressively, carbon ceramic brakes.

Lamborghini smashed with sledgehammers
By Mitchell Oke · 17 Mar 2011
Most people who’ve experienced poor customer service (and who of us hasn’t?) would tell their friends, maybe write a letter, or simply not buy from that company again. Not so for this Chinese businessman, who’s used Lamborghini failed to start only a month after purchase. Sources say Lamborghini refused to fix the car over maintenance issues, and the owner claims the dealer caused additional damage when towing the sports car. Disgruntled with their response, he had several men take to it with sledgehammers, in a public spectacle filmed by onlookers and posted online.

MINI Rocketman concept
By Mitchell Oke · 23 Feb 2011
Small cars are much bigger than they were 40 years ago, with nothing demonstrating that better than the MINI Cooper in 2001. Further bulking up the brand, the four-door MINI Countryman takes on the Compact SUV market, for those who want the coolness of a Cooper, without the size compromise.Enter the Rocketman Concept. Shaving 20 centimetres off the modern MINI Cooper, the Rocketman edges the brand little closer in size to the classic Mini, without sacrificing the technology we’ve come to expect.Described as a 3+1, the 3-door concept car can be setup in two, three or four seater configurations, and uses double-hinged front doors to reduce the space needed to open them fully. The rear hatch is split, with a large panel opening upwards, and a drawer style arrangement that slides out at the bottom.Clearly designed with the youth market in mind, a lot of glass above the door line promotes an airy feel, and technology abounds with 3D graphics adorning the various displays.

TeamVodafone launch Eau De Engine cologne
By Mitchell Oke · 02 Dec 2010
That’s the question posed by TeamVodafone, with the launch of a fragrance for men dubbed Eau de Engine. While dressing up in Ford or Holden jackets and hats are enough for some people, TeamVodafone obviously believe there are people who’d like to smell of it too. “There is nothing like the sweet smell of success, mixed with grease and burnt rubber” Jamie Whincup explains. “May the true essence of this great sport ignite the nostrils, and unleash the zeal and passion of the Australian public.” If you have to urge to take your motor racing passion too far, ten bottles of Eau de Engine have been made available for sale on eBay, with the proceeds going to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

By Mitchell Oke · 17 Nov 2010
Usain Bolt is used to spending his days at a track, but for once he is not the fastest thing there. The current 100m and 200m world-record holder spent some time at Ferrari's Fiorano test track in Maranello, Italy, as both passenger and driver of the 599 GTB Fiorano and 458 Italia.Ferrari test drivers Dario Benuzzi and Raffaele De Simone took the wheel first, before handing the keys to Bolt for some laps and lessons on car control."It’s a little bit like me, very reactive and determined!" Usain Bolt says, having stepped out of the 458 Italia. “I was really scared, but it was a good scare. I’m excited like a child.” he says.Usain Bolt is not new to driving fast cars. Major sponsor Puma provided Bolt with a new BMW M3 Coupe, which he crashed in April 2009 when driving on a wet highway. The crash rolled the BMW several times, but Bolt escaped with only minor injuries.

Gymkhana THREE Given the 51st Degree
By Mitchell Oke · 21 Sep 2010
He gets to live in one. And it doesn’t have rails… Having amazed audiences with his insane driving skills for years, Ken Block’s latest video Gymkhana THREE is an absolute thriller! Showcasing Block’s immense talent for driving a car on the absolute edge, his new Ford Fiesta gets closer to walls at high speed than you’d feel comfortable with in the supermarket car park. The stage is the l'Autodrome de Linas in France, where Block spins, jumps and smokes the 650 horsepower all-wheel-drive Fiesta. The circuit features stunts on l’Autodrome’s oval track which was chosen specifically due to its 51 degree banking, a feat which had not been attempted before. “When Ford partnered with Ken Block for the Fiesta and WRC rally programs, the opportunity to participate in projects like Gymkhana THREE was an attractive part of the overall package,” said Jamie Allison, Director Ford North America Motorsports. A 2011 Fiesta was used as the starting point for Block's new car, with extensive modifications including aggressively flared wheel arches, a six-speed sequential paddle-shift gearbox, and the purpose-built 650hp engine (detuned from its maximum 850hp) that can propel the car to 100kph in 2 seconds. With over 5 minutes of non-stop madness, Gymkhana THREE will knock your socks off!
