Stop the killing
By Matt Brogan · 11 May 2012
That’s the number of deaths on our roads each year. And every year those thousands of ownerless shoes make a silent plea to stop the carnage. The heart-wrenching display sends a tangible reminder of the devastating impact a split-second of reckless driving can have – not just on accident victims but also their friends and families. Australian Road Safety Foundation CEO Russell White said “The display is used to demonstrate the human cost of road trauma. It’s also a very sobering reminder that road fatalities aren’t just a number, they’re real people.” Entering its sixth year, Fatality Free Friday has gained sponsors from all levels – be that small workplaces, local councils or large businesses. Caltex, Suncorp and Monroe Shock Absorbers are marked to be 2012’s big name sponsors. Pledging is also a huge part of the event with drivers signing up online to agree to consciously think about safe road use in May. So far over 34000 people have signed the pledge. Event organisers hope to double that number by May 25 – the official date for Fatality Free Friday. As support grows for the cause, this year’s event will be held in Canberra for the first time, as well as Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Further expansion is also in the pipeline. “We’ve had interest from places like Canada, as well as the US and the UK. They’ve asked us what they can do run a successful campaign. It’s about creating a global vision and managing growth the best way possible” said Russell White. Will you help keep our roads safe this May? Head on over to the Fatality Free Friday website and pledge your allegiance to safe driving. While 14000 pairs of empty shoes makes an impressive display, this is a number no one wants to see increase next year.

Ferrari burnout angers China
By Matt Brogan · 10 May 2012
Burning rubber on a Chinese landmark isn’t the best way to promote a brand – one Ferrari employee did it anyway. Now Ferrari are up to their eyeballs in apologetic gestures after the dealership worker was filmed doing donuts on a section of a 600 year old Nanjing wall. The hoon-like PR stunt left parts of the Ming-Dynasty era landmark smeared with tyre marks. Worse still, Chinese officials claim structural damage has also occurred which will result in a hefty after-party cleanup bill for the luxury car company. While Ferrari can easily foot the bill – estimated to be over $600,000 – the brand may struggle to win back China’s respect.
