Laura Berry is a best-selling Australian author and journalist who has been reviewing cars for almost 20 years.

Much more of a Hot Wheels girl than a Matchbox one, she grew up in a family that would spend every Friday night sitting on a hill at the Speedway watching Sprintcars slide in the mud. The best part of this was being given money to buy stickers. She loved stickers… which then turned into a love of tattoos.

Out of boredom, she learnt to drive at 14 on her parents’ bush property in what can only be described as a heavily modified Toyota LandCruiser.

At the age of 17 she was told she couldn’t have a V8 Holden ute by her mother, which led to Laura and her father laying in the driveway for three months building a six-cylinder ute with more horsepower than a V8.

Since then she’s only ever owned V8s, with a Ford Falcon XW and a Holden Monaro CV8 part of her collection over the years.

Laura has authored two books and worked as a journalist writing about science, cars, music, TV, cars, art, food, cars, finance, architecture, theatre, cars, film and cars. But, mainly cars.

A wife and parent, her current daily driver is a chopped 1951 Ford Tudor with a V8.

Volkswagen Transporter EV here by Christmas
By Laura Berry · 09 Apr 2025
Volkswagen has confirmed its electric Transporter mid-sized van will arrive in Australia before the end of this year to go head-to-head with the Ford E-Transit Custom and LDV eDeliver 7.In an announcement made this week Volkswagen said the Transporter battery electric vehicle (BEV) would land locally in the third quarter of 2025. This would have the electric version of the new-generation Transporter arriving at the same time as the diesel variant, with the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant following in the second quarter of 2026.Volkswagen also confirmed some vital specifications for the Transporter EV. A single electric motor producing 210kW and 450Nm will power the Transporter EV’s rear wheels and a payload capacity of 1038kg will apply to both short-wheelbase and long-wheel base versions. In comparison, the diesel variant of the Transporter uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 125kW and 390Nm, and will be available in front- and all-wheel drive. Short- and long wheelbase grades will have a payload of 1326kg.The Transporter PHEV will be powered by a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid system making a combined 205kW and 320Nm, with both short- and long wheelbases offering 1140kg of payload.Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Product Manager Nadia Bucholtz said the new-generation Transporter would cater for more applications than before.“Short and long wheelbases, standard roof height and high roof variants, front-wheel drive and 4Motion, Transporter has remained committed to supplying the most fit-for-purpose vehicles to our customers, including the most extensive range of applications,” Ms Bucholtz said.“The addition of BEV and PHEV variants to the range serves to further expand that product offering, particularly as our customers look to ways to minimise their emissions, maximise drive comfort and reduce running costs.”Volkswagen developed the Transporter EV in conjunction with Ford which has produced its version, the E-Transit Custom, and that is also expected to arrive in 2025.Pricing for both vehicles has not been announced yet but buyers can expect Volkswagen’s Transporter EV to list from about $70,000. LDV's eDeliver 7 is a popular rival to both the Transporter EV and E-Transit Custom and starts at $67,358 before extending up to $73,674.The entry price into the current generation of the Transporter is for the diesel 320S Trend short-wheel base which starts at $56,590 before on-road costs and extends to the top-of-the-range grade at $62,990.Volkswagen’s reveal of the Transporter's arrival timing came during a broader announcement detailing the brand’s upcoming commercial vehicles including the Caddy light cargo carrier, the electric ID. Buzz retro Kombi, the larger Crafter and the new-generation and just-arrived Multivan people mover.

First look inside next-gen Honda Prelude
By Laura Berry · 03 Apr 2025
The interior of the eagerly awaited next-gen Honda Prelude has been revealed thanks to a Japanese YouTuber who has given us a glimpse into the cabin. When the Prelude concept made its debut in 2023 at the Tokyo mobility show it had blacked-out windows so the interior remained a mystery. It’s also highly unlikely it even had a finished interior at that point. Now thanks to Japanese YouTuber Unadon we’ve been given a guided tour inside the two-door 2+2 seater sports car and it's not quite as groundbreaking as we hoped. If anything the cabin, dashboard, controls and instruments are much the same as the cockpit in the current Honda Civic.Sure the new Prelude’s cabin is sporty and the two-tone sports seats with embossed Prelude headrests look modern and luxurious, but the climate control dials, honeycomb mesh air vents and steering wheel will all be familiar to anybody who has bought a Honda in the past few years. The rear seat is more or less a hard grey-coloured featureless bench without any form of obvious lateral support or even moulding for rear passengers. It’s unlikely the back seats will ever house the two people they’re designed to accommodate given the lack of space back there with the heavily sloped roofline and limited legroom. Unadon discovered how cramped it is when we ventured back there. There are also two ISOFIX points if child seats need to be installed.Unadon also gives us a look at the boot under the Prelude's liftback tailgate, revealing a small but deep area behind the rear seats that appears to be about 200 litres in capacity. He also folds the rear seats down to open up even more load carrying space. The Prelude, which is expected to make its European launch by the middle of 2025, will be hybrid only and use a petrol-electric system similar to the unit in the Civic. A manual transmission won't be available either. It's still not been confirmed for Australia, but our fingers are crossed.

A family SUV with a big V8 and big price tag
By Laura Berry · 02 Apr 2025
Audi is swimming against the electric car tide, launching its flagship RS Q8 Performance super SUV in Australia with the most powerful V8 the company has ever given birth to.The RS Q8 is the sportiest version of Audi's flagship five-seat Q8. The RS Q8 Performance has taken things further, with a twin-turbo V8 making more grunt than any other in the company’s history with an output of 471kW and 850Nm. That’s an increase of 30kW over the outgoing RS Q8.That’s enough oomph to hurl the 2.2-tonne SUV from 0-100km/h in a supercar-like 3.6 seconds. The RS Q8 has also set a lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife of 7:36.698. Pulling the RS Q8 up fast are huge 440mm ceramic front brakes in 23-inch five-spoke alloy wheels.   A freshly redesigned exterior with carbon-fibre grille frame, mirror caps, redesigned matrix LED headlights and new tail-lights make the RS Q8 look as mean as it is quick.Standard features inside include Nappa leather upholstery, RS sports front seats with heating and ventilation, four-zone climate control, brushed aluminium trim elements, a 17-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system, a panoramic sunroof, power assisted doors, and a power tailgate. The price, however, is a little bit more expensive then the outgoing model with the RS Q8 Performance listing for $255,800 before on-road costs, an increase of $27,500.That's a little pricier than the 460kW BMW X6 M Competition ($250,900 before on-road costs), but less than the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe 4Matic+($275,300 BOC).

LDV G0+ gets the big screen!
By Laura Berry · 02 Apr 2025
One of the oldest vans on the market is showing no sign of retiring anytime soon with the LDV G10+ appearing to have been given a substantial facelift, which includes new safety tech, a large media screen, new styling and features. The new version wears a $1500 price rise, which still undercuts rivals such as the Toyota HiAce and Ford Transit by a sizable margin.Importantly, it's clear the new G10+ has been fitted with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), which was a large oversight in its spec previously. This change would ensure the G10+ would meet the new 2026 minimum safety standards requiring AEB come as standard on all new vehicles.Lane keeping assistance and forward collision warning will also join rear parking sensors, a reversing camera driver and passenger airbags, plus electronics stability control as part of the van's new safety suite.Other new G10+ features CarsGuide spotted include a 12.3-inch media screen, replacing the previous 7.0-inch display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also standard, so is digital radio, air conditioning and power windows. It was also noted that the brands website now only lists diesel variants, which could indicate the petrol engine has been dropped, at least initially. The latest price data shows the new G10+ has also increased in price. The entry six-speed manual 2.0-litre turbo-diesel is now $38,937, drive-away, which is a $1579 increase on the previous model. Meanwhile, the G10+ with the eight-speed automatic is now $39,463 (also up by $1579). For context, Toyota’s HiAce (the most popular vehicle in the segment) starts at a list price of $48,886, while the Ford Transit begins at $56,590.Images also reveal a slight redesign to the front of the vehicle with a new look honeycomb grille and restyled front bumper, as well as a tweaked dash layout. Measuring 5167mm end-to-end, 1980mm wide, 1938mm tall and with a one-tonne payload capacity the G10+ is considered a medium-sized van. It has been on sale in Australia for a decade this year, yet it still remains one of the most-bought medium sized vans on the market with 2843 sales in 2024.It appears LDV still sees a place for the G10+ to live alongside the new and more expensive Deliver 7, which was once touted to replace its aging sibling. The Deliver7 arrived towards the end of 2024 with a price of $44,726 driveaway, although it was headlined primarily by its electric eDeliver 7 spin-off, which wears a competitive price-tag of $67,358 (drive-away).

Delayed! Too many want hybrids
By Laura Berry · 01 Apr 2025
Toyota buyers around the world are facing extended delays on delivery of their newly purchased cars due to a rise in the popularity of hybrids. We asked Toyota Australia if the shortage affects us here, too.The delays are all down to a shortage of components for hybrid vehicles which have become popular following several years in which fully electric vehicles went through a boom, only for interest to start tapering off.The surge in popularity for hybrids has forced Toyota to rush to meet the increase in demand with the company saying it would boost production. Toyota also released a statement appearing to play down the matter. "Currently, the production capacity for hybrid parts and components from our suppliers and our in-house parts manufacturing is line with our annual production plans and our vehicle assembly capacity," it said.A concerning factor is that the shortage of parts affecting vehicle delivery time is widespread. Hybrid stock is low in the United States, Japan, China and Europe according to a report from Reuters news agency.Australia has also seen an increase in demand for hybrid vehicles with last year’s total sales up by 39.9 per cent on 2023 and while there is still a growing appetite for electric cars here, the uptake appears to be slowing with 2024’s total up by 10 per cent. The news appears to support Toyota’s long held view that despite an interest in fully electric vehicles consumers would return to hybrids. Toyota Australia has long maintained hybrids would become the preferred choice over electric cars. The company has only one electric vehicle - the bZ4X - on sale here, while the rest of its range is almost entirely hybrid including the RAV4, Kluger, Corolla, Corolla Cross, Yaris and Yaris Cross. CarsGuide asked Toyota Australia if the current hybrid shortage would affect local buyers.“Hybrid-electric vehicles account for more than half our sales this year,” a Toyota Australia spokesperson said. “Supply is healthy, both now and confirmed for the coming months. Customers placing an order today can expect to receive their vehicle in less than four months on average.”Currently wait times are nothing compared to how long customers were waiting on cars in 2022 when COVID-19 and a semi-conductor shortage blew delivery times out to a year for certain in-demand Toyota models.

Hyundai doesn't want to just be a car company
By Laura Berry · 31 Mar 2025
Hyundai has launched its latest software and technology platform, calling it a significant step towards becoming a “mobility tech company”. Hyundai’s new software brand is called Pleos and the plans were announced recently at the Pleos 25 developer conference where the Korean giant outlined five key elements of its vision. The first is a proprietary vehicle operating system, an in-house designed-and-owned system the company says will improve vehicle performance. The next was Pleos Connect, which is Hyundai's next-generation infotainment system that will launch in the second quarter of 2026 and be rolled out to millions of vehicles around the world. The third is Pleos Playground. which is designed to encourage outside developers to produce apps that can be downloaded by owners and used in their vehicles. Fourth is what the Hyundai Group calls the next Urban Mobility Alliance. This will be introduced as a way for the public and private sectors to partner up to improve autonomous transport. Finally, Hyundai wants to attract companies such as Google, Uber and Samsung to collaborate on developing the new generation of cars, now called 'software-defined vehicles'.President and Head of Hyundai Motor and Kia Advanced Vehicle Platform Division, Chang Song, said Pleos was the start of connected mobility for the Korean group.“In the rapidly changing automotive industry, Hyundai Motor Group has been dedicated to SDV development since 2023. Today, starting with Pleos 25, we are transforming into a company providing software-centered mobility experiences,” Song said.“Our ultimate goal is to achieve Cloud Mobility, where all forms of mobility are connected through software on the cloud, and continuously evolve over time. Pleos serves to create a connected mobility experience expanding from a vehicle to fleets, hardware to software, and ultimately to the entire mobility infrastructure and cities.”Pleos is what Hyundai calls an end-to-end software platform that will integrate vehicle operating systems, infotainment systems, cloud infrastructure, the management of fleets and transportation logistics.Hyundai has long had a vision of being more than just a car company, with connected transportation part of its future plans. In 2020 at the Consumer Electronics Show in the United States, Hyundai announced its future mobility vision which consisted of an urban air mobility transport system called HUB connected by personal air vehicles and ground-based autonomous purpose-built vehicles. In 2021 Hyundai Group bought Boston Dynamics, the cutting-edge robotics company. The company is also investing heavily in alternative fuels such as hydrogen. Last year Hyundai provided a preview of its Initium hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle to show its commitment to the fuel's development.
