Chinese carmaker Leapmotor has teased us with a hint of its sleek, small electric hatch the B05 ahead of its upcoming Munich motor show debut.

The company’s boss Cia Li promised it would be a “gift” for young people worldwide.

Called the Lafa 5 in China, images of the B05 were posted to China’s Weibo social media platform by Li.

"We want to build a dream car for young people who refuse to settle, conform, or be ordinary!" Li wrote in the post.

"Global personalised strategy new product Lafa 5, see you in Munich on September 8."

The B05 is expected to be a close rival to the BYD Dolphin and MG4, both in price and size.

The shadowy images posted on Weibo don’t give too much away, but we can see it’s a sporty, four-door hatch with wheel arches that push up into the bonnet, leapmotor’s signature LED headlight and running light design, a heavily raked windscreen, flush mounted door handles and a short and upright tailgate.

A roof-mounted LiDAR can be seen above the windscreen hinting at advanced safety technology.

No interior images have been released at this point but buyers can expect the cabin to look similar to the Leapmotor C10 EV (shown) already on sale in Australia.

It's expected to be a tad more than four metres long and have a 67kWh battery delivering a driving range of up to 420km. Power comes from a -single electric motor driving the front wheels.

Will the B05 come to Australia? Well, given Li’s comments about making the car available worldwide, it certainly seems so.

Leapmotor arrived in Australia with its C10 EV electric mid-sized SUV in late 2024, and followed that with a plug-in hybrid version the C10 REEV this year.

If the B05 does come to Australia buyers can expect the hatch to be priced to compete with the BYD Dolphin, which lists from $29,990 and the MG4 which can be had for $37,990 drive-away.

We’ll know more when the Leapmotor debuts at the Munich motor show next week.
