Best second-hand city runaround?
Answered by Graham Smith · 01 Jul 2016

I wouldn't consider any of the European brands, they're too expensive and cost too much to run. That rules out the Up. Asian brands, particularly the better-known and well-respected Japanese brands are a much better bet, which rules in the Echo. The Asian brands tend to be more reliable and cost much less to run. Another to look at in your situation is the Suzuki Alto

Best options for used first car?
Answered by Graham Smith · 10 Jun 2016

The cars you have been looking at are all good, sound and safe ones that have no serious issues to be concerned about and would give you reliable service for many years to come. Note that all of them are from Asia; I would suggest that you rule out anything from Europe. Another to consider would be the Mitsubishi Lancer.

Toyota LandCruiser: best 4x4 to pull a catering trailer?

Toyota Camry 2005: Is it better to recondition or replace?
Answered by Paul Gover · 13 Jun 2016

Normally I would tell you to cut and run from such a high-mileage car but it sounds like a member of the family. Besides, you won't get much for $7000 and your Camry still seems to be running fine.

Toyota RAV4: Is it a good second-hand buy?
Answered by Paul Gover · 12 Jul 2016

The RAV4 is generally bulletproof, so if the family mechanic clears it then it should be a good choice.

Problems when buying a Foton 4x4?
Answered by Paul Gover · 13 Jun 2016

It's an unproven brand, which is why they are cheap. It was the same with Great Wall and their resale values reflect the way owners and potential owners feel about them. I wouldn't do it.

Best small car for city driving?
Answered by Paul Gover · 13 Jun 2016

You're not alone feeling the stress of choosing a new car. Toyota's Yaris is the safe choice but you should test drive the Suzuki Swift, since it also gets The Tick. Bargain hard on your favourite.

Best SUV for towing a caravan?
Answered by Paul Gover · 28 Jun 2016

I would take the Touareg over the Discovery but the real outback towing champion is the Toyota LandCruiser — which gets a big tick from me — because of its bulletproof reliability and Toyota's service network. The badge is not as prestigious and it will cost more for a fully luxury package but the 200-Series 'Cruiser is still The King.
