Used Toyota Aurion review: 2006-2008
By Graham Smith · 20 May 2010
TOYOTA threatened to enter the big-six market for many years before it took the plunge with the Aurion.  There was the Lexcen-badged Commodore and when that failed they launched the bland Avalon, and when that did nothing to excite the masses they launched the Aurion. The Aurion presented something a little different in the segment that had been dominated by Holden and Ford for many years and enough buyers signed up for Toyota to claim it as a success.MODEL WATCHTHE pitch for the Aurion was good; it had class-leading power and economy, and better value for money.  The Aurion shared its mechanical package with the Camry, but Toyota's engineers worked hard to differentiate it from its sibling. It was given a more aggressive look, while the cabin got new seats, a revised dash and dials, and a large centre console.  The 3.5-litre V6 boasted 204kW at 6200 revs and 336Nm at 4700 revs, which was more than the Falcon or Commodore could muster at the time. There was a six-speed auto transmission with touch-change manual shifting and intelligent auto operation. The final drive was through the front wheels, something Aussies had spurned in their big cars in the past, but Toyota was confident those fears had long since faded.  There were five models in total, split into two groups. On one side were the sporty models, including the Sportivo, while on the other were the luxury variants, including the Presara.ON THE ROADWITH 200kW-plus on tap there was no shortage of zip with the Aurion. It jumped out of the blocks and delivered through the rev range. The comfortable ride was matched by supportive seats and responsive handling. There was a lot to like about the Aurion.IN THE SHOPOVERALL the Aurion lives up to Toyota's reputation for quality and reliability, it is a generally sound car that gives little trouble. There have been some reports of piston slap and complaints of the intermediate steering shaft coming loose have been heard.IN A CRUNCHTHE Aurion had a comprehensive active and passive safety package. It had anti-skid braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction and stability control. On the passive side it had front airbags for the driver and passenger, as well as side and head airbags.ANCAP rated the Aurion four stars.AT THE PUMPTOYOTA claimed an impressive 9.9 litres/100km for its new big car, which is being borne out in service. Owners report 8.5-9.9 litres/100km around town. To get the best out of it the Aurion should be run on 95-octane premium unleaded.THE BOTTOM LINEGOOD all-round family car with good performance and economy, comprehensive safety package, and Toyota build quality.80/100LOOK FORBig-car roominessClass-leading performanceGood fuel economyGenerally reliableFor ANCAP vehicle safetyratings, visit howsafeisyourcar.com.au

We have received a number of similar reports on the same issue, and we have passed them all on to Toyota for a response, which we will publish when we receive it.

Nissan Navara: Hidden servicing costs
Answered by Graham Smith · 08 Jun 2010

We phoned around and the price you were quoted was very close to the prices we were quoted, it was actually lower than one. Few of us look beyond the purchase price when we buy a new car, but it’s a good idea to check the ongoing costs we will face after we’ve bought it. You experience is a good example; by buying the Navara you face higher servicing costs.

Toyota HiLux 2006: Can I fit a towbar to the front?
Answered by Graham Smith · 03 Jun 2010

It will almost certainly affect the structure of the front-end of the HiLux, which will in turn affect the crumple rate of the body, and in turn affect the operation of the airbag.

Toyota Aurion: Difficulty tyre-balancing
Answered by Graham Smith · 01 Jun 2010

After the second attempt to balance them you should have test driven the car with the guy from the tyre store to see for yourself that they were balanced properly. If that drive showed there was still a problem you could have demanded they be changed for wheels that could be balanced or asked for your money back.

Ask Smithy Xtra LPG conversion for Land Cruiser
Answered by Graham Smith · 01 Jun 2010

Lots of six-cylinder LandCruisers have been fitted with the traditional air valve type of LPG system and it works pretty well. The downside to it is that you lose a fair amount of performance by using an air valve system, simply because it’s hard to precisely tune it to the engine, and you really feel the loss of performance on a big, heavy car like the ’Cruiser. The better choice today is a vapour-injection system, which can be precisely tuned to the engine so that it will perform as well on gas as it would on petrol.

Toyota Corolla: Rattling
Answered by Graham Smith · 25 May 2010

I haven’t heard of any such policy and I haven’t seen anything written in warranties specifically about rattles and squeaks. My enquiries at Toyota have failed to get any answer that might help you. I doubt that there is such a policy; I reckon the dealer is trying to get rid of you because they don’t want to spend the time to fix your complaint. In Toyota’s defence, however, I would say that squeaks and rattles could, after a period of time, be regarded as the result of wear and tear rather than a design deficiency and hence not covered by the warranty.

Tired Toyota Lexcen
Answered by Carsguide.com.au · 10 Jun 2010

No, using an injector cleaner would only help if you were running on petrol, it would have no effect at all if you were running on gas. I would suspect that the engine is tired and in need of a freshen up, particularly if it's been running on gas for some time. Installing new plugs and leads would help, but I would suggest you have the compression checked. That would tell you if the valves are sticking, or even leaking.

Toyota Camry 2004: How much is the Altise worth?
Answered by Graham Smith · 20 May 2010

The repairs seem to have been carried out competently and the tests confirm that the engine is in good condition, so I would be happy to buy the car. The price your friend is asking is about the current market value and the kays are about average.
