My two-year-old Toyota Corolla has developed an annoying rattle on the left side of the dash around the glove box. I took it to my local Toyota service centre to have it fixed under warranty, but it still rattled when I picked it up. When I complained I was told that Toyota would only fix rattles and squeaks in cars up to 20,000 km and as my car has done more than that all future work on this issue would be at my cost. The warranty talks about wear and tear items, but there?s no mention of squeaks and rattles. Toyota?s customer service people took my details when I called and said they would investigate, but we have heard nothing back and my guess is that we never will. To say we are disappointed in Toyota is an understatement. Have you heard anything about warranty exclusions like this and is this a general industry practice?
I haven’t heard of any such policy and I haven’t seen anything written in warranties specifically about rattles and squeaks. My enquiries at Toyota have failed to get any answer that might help you. I doubt that there is such a policy; I reckon the dealer is trying to get rid of you because they don’t want to spend the time to fix your complaint. In Toyota’s defence, however, I would say that squeaks and rattles could, after a period of time, be regarded as the result of wear and tear rather than a design deficiency and hence not covered by the warranty.
