Toyota welcomes recall verdict
By Neil Dowling · 10 Feb 2011
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - which is as close to God as bureaucratically possible - has teamed up with NASA - also known to fly close to God - and dumped on accusers who have tried to sue Toyota for sticky accelerator pedals. After a 10-month investigation requested by Congress, the two authorities has found no evidence of electronic problems in runaway Toyotas.Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood yesterday released a statement saying: "The jury is back. The verdict is in. There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. Period".NASA examined more than 280,000 separate lines of code embedded in the electronics of potentially affected Toyotas. None contained any flaws capable of causing runaway acceleration, says the report.Toyota in 2010 was the only major carmaker to report falling sales and some blame on the result has been put on the recall crisis. Its 2010 sales fell 0.4 per cent as the total US market grew 11.1 per cent. In January this year, Toyota sales lifted to equal growth of other carmakers but this was achieved by heavy discounting.US officials have been investigating 89 deaths that may be associated with sudden acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Authorities have definitively linked only a few of the fatalities to the problem, including four deaths in a Lexus in California in August 2009 that was blamed on a jammed floor mat.Though this week's reprieve is a relief for Toyota, the company isn't completely of the hook."Our conclusion - that Toyota's problems were mechanical, not electrical - come after one of the most exhaustive, thorough and intensive research efforts ever undertaken," says LaHood. The "mechanical problems" - that is, sticky accelerator pedals and pedals that got trapped under faulty floor mats - "remain the only known causes for these kind of unsafe unintended acceleration incidents", says the NHTSA.Now it's up to how the courts and the public view the findings.Toyota says it "welcomed" the findings and "appreciate the thoroughness of their review"."We believe this rigorous scientific analysis by some of America's foremost engineers should further reinforce confidence in the safety of Toyota and Lexus vehicles," Toyota says. "We hope this important study will help put to rest unsupported speculation about Toyota's ETCS-i (electronic throttle system), which is well-designed and well-tested to ensure that a real world, un-commanded acceleration of the vehicle cannot occur."The findings also support Toyota's position that it had identified and fixed the only known safety problems related to two massive recalls in 2009 and 2010. The NHTSA now says driver error may be behind many complaints.

Toyota refuses to issue recall on RAV4
By Paul Gover · 02 Aug 2012
The company admits there is a potential problem with the rear suspension of the popular SUV but says it has no plans for a safety-related recall. Instead, it intends to notify owners of more than 65,000 cars by letter, advising an inspection at a Toyota dealership. In the USA, the RAV is the subject of a major recall involving more than 778,000 vehicles -- the others are the Lexus HS250h sedan not sold here -- that continues a long string of safety scares for the world's best selling carmaker.Toyota recalled more than 3 million vehicles last year in the USA, including a group of RAVs built in 2007 and 2008, because there was potential for their airbags to fire without warning. The RAV is also being investigated by the Federal government over door fires potentially linked to electric-window switches. In Australia, there was a recall in November involving 21,792 locally-made Camrys over a steering issue. In the latest case involving the RAV4, the problem has been traced to insufficient tightening of rear-suspension nuts after a wheel alignment. This can lead to wear and potential failure of a rear-suspension arm.Six case of failure have been reported in Australia but company spokesman Beck Angel says there have been no crashes attributable to the problem. Even so, owners of 66,377 RAVs built between October 2005 and November 2010 will be contacted by Toyota Australia.“The rest of the regions -- Japan, Oceania, Europe, Asia and others -- will conduct a customer review,'' she says. ``North American dealers conduct a rear wheel alignment before the cars go to the customers. Other regions don't do that. So the problem is more likely in North America.“In Australia, the customer review is more precautionary.'' Toyota says the problem is attributed to insufficient tightening of the rear suspension bolts. No accidents attributable to the problem have been reported to Toyota. Ms Angel says in Australia, 66,377 RAV4s, built from October 2005 to November 2010, are affected.Toyota will notify owners by letter and request a vehicle inspection at a Toyota service centre. There is concern that some vehicles have changed owners and may not be able to be contacted by Toyota. ``We will notify all automotive groups and associations to capture those cars that are no longer on our records,'' Ms Angel says.

24,000 Toyota Camrys recalled
By Craig Duff · 14 Nov 2011
More than 24,000 cars sold in Australia are potentially at risk of a power steering failure, with two cases already reported. Cars covered by the recall, all built in 2004 and 2005, will have the crankshaft pulley on the front of their engine replaced. "The Avalon and Camry V6 were built at our Altona factory but it is  not a manufacturing fault," Toyota spokeswoman Laura Hill said."The crankshaft pulley was supplied by a Japanese component provider and we  will be replacing that part on the affected cars. It takes about 90 minutes for the service staff to complete the job."She said Toyota has identified the problem as insufficient glue being applied to the outer ring of the crankshaft pulley, which could allow movement that would dislodge the drive belt for the power steering. The fault can cause noises from the engine bay and the charging system warning light to illuminate and, in the worst-case scenario, the driver would need much more force than normal to turn the steering. Hill said there have been no reports of steering failure in Australia."We've had one case of a Kluger owner noticing the charge light came on and a Lexus owner has reported the same issue," she said. Toyota Australia said the safety recall was a preventative action and customers can continue to drive their vehicles. The announcement continues a horror year for the world's biggest carmaker, which will lose its place at the top of the global sales charts to Volkswagen and could even slip to third behind General Motors. It has also recently withdrawn its earning forecast.Toyota's production was savaged by the March earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan and that was compounded by recent floods in Thailand that are still affecting vehicle production.Toyota's renowned reputation for reliability has been hammered in the past two years by a succession of recalls related to "unintended   acceleration". More than three million vehicles were returned to Toyota dealerships in the US to fix accelerator pedals that stuck or could potentially be caught in floor mats.In Australia, more than 4800 Lexus IS250s were recalled in February to remedy a potential fuel leak due to a fuel pressure sensor that could work loose and there was an earlier recall for computer tweaks to overcome a braking problem in the Prius hybrid.Recall vehicle numbers: 24,222Toyota Camry V6: 11,235Toyota Avalon: 3591Toyota Kluger: 6966Lexus ES300: 365Lexus RX330: 2065

Toyota recalls close to 20,000 cars
By CarsGuide team · 09 Aug 2012
Toyota has issued a recall on 19,099 Camry, Camry Hybrid and Aurion sedans over a fire risk. The recall says an incorrectly manufactured fuel hose could leak and result in a potential fire hazard. “There is a possibility the hose that connects the main fuel supply line to the engine may have become wrinkled, and in some cases this could result in a small hole in the fuel hose which may allow fuel to leak,” Toyota spokesperson Beck Angel said. The recall is for 19,099 cars built at Toyota’s Altona plant in Victoria between October 2011 and July 2012.Toyota is sending letters to owners, urging them to contact a dealership for a 30-minute inspection and – if deemed necessary -- a free replacement of the hose that will take about an hour. Angel said no incidents related to the fuel hose have been reported. "There have been no fires, there is potential for a fire hazard but because of the location of the fuel and the distance from the ignition source, it's a relatively low risk,'' she said.In November last year Toyota Australia recalled almost 22,000 of its Avalon, Camry and Kluger models from June 2004 to March 2005 over concerns about the crankshaft pulley belts and potential loss of power steering assistance. The previous-generation Camry was also involved in a vehicle recall in the US in late 2009 and early 2010 involving more than five million US-made vehicles over problems with accelerator pedals and floor mats, a campaign which did not include Australian-built vehicles. For more information, Camry and Aurion owners should call 1800 643 242.

Toyota USA recalls two million cars
By Paul Gover · 25 Feb 2011
... as Toyota sweeps up the dregs from its 'unintended acceleration' crisis. The action comes after a Federal investigation revealed the major source of trouble was incorrect and faulty floor mats, which had the potential to trap the vehicle's accelerator pedal.Toyota USA has now negotiated a voluntary recall on a range of vehicles built since 2006, including the Lexus GS, RX and LX, as well as the Toyota RAV4 and 4Runner.The total number of vehicles involved is just over 2.1 million, with most to get modified or replacement mats and retention clips. But there will be no impact in Australia, which has a different right- hand drive pedal layout and different floor mats."There is no impact here. No cars in Australia are affected," a Toyota spokesman said yesterday.

Toyota recalls close to 300,000 cars
By Neil Dowling · 10 Oct 2012
Toyota Australia says the recall -- from a 7.4 million global batch -- affects Corolla, Kluger, RAV4, Yaris, Aurion and Camry vehicles built between 2006 and 2010.The recall is to replace the electric window master switch, located on the driver's armrest. There have been six cases reported in Australia from a total of 297,931 vehicles specified by Toyota Australia. Globally 7.4 million vehicles are impacted. It says the problem is that the switch doesn't operate smoothly and has a "sticky feel". "This is due to the non-uniform application of lubricating grease resulting in wear to the internal sliding contact points,'' it says in a recall notice. "In some instances, the switch may become inoperative.''In a further warning, Toyota Australia spokesperson Beck Angel says if a lubricant has been applied to the switch in an attempt to rectify this operation, "the switch assembly may overheat and melt''. "This recall is a precautionary measure,'' she says."The switch will be checked mechanically and electrically for correct operation and specialised electrical grease will then be applied to ensure it operates smoothly when pressed.'' Only a small number of vehicles will require the window's electrical circuit board to be replaced."The inspection and any required repairs will take approximately one hour to complete and will be at no cost to the owner,'' Ms Angel says. "Depending on the dealer's work schedule however, the car may need to be available for a longer period of time."Should Toyota owners experience sticking operation of the power window master switch, we recommend that the switch is no longer used prior to vehicle inspection and repair.'' Ms Angel would not put a figure on the cost of the recall to Toyota.Toyota will start a mailout to owners of affected vehicles at their last known address from mid-November asking them to make an appointment with their preferred Toyota dealer. For further information about the recall, customers can call Toyota on 1800 987 366.The recall is not Toyota's for 2012 - fears over fuel leaks and potential fire risk has forced a recall in August of nearly 20,000 Australian-built Camry and Aurion vehicles to fix a wrinkled fuel line in the engine bay.

Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota RAV4 recalls
By Mark Hinchliffe · 15 Mar 2012
The voluntary recall has been issued for the Santa Fe diesels over the risk of a fuel leak and possible fire. Hyundai Australia issued the voluntary recall on 9000 Santa Fe 2.2-litre R diesels built between September 1, 2009 and December 13, 2011.The defect involves a lack of clearance between the engine cover assembly and fuel return hose which could cause wear in the hose, leading to a fuel leak and the risk of fire. However, company spokesman Ben Hershman says not every vehicle will be affected. "There have been no incidences of any problems caused by this issue in Australia to date," he says. "Owners should present the car to their dealer who will inspect all hoses and replace any if there are signs of wear," he says."They may also install a small clip to the return fuel hose to act as an additional protection barrier removing the possibility of interference." Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by letter. Meanwhile, Toyota has issued a voluntary safety recall of 22 RAV4 vehicles over a possible steering problem. The recall involves a defect in a prototype instrument panel reinforcement or steering column support bracket which may have been installed in some RAV4 vehicles.A welded section in the bracket could separate, causing noise. In the worst case, steering operation may be affected. There have been no reported incidents in Australia. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by telephone and mail. Any authorised Toyota dealer will replace the unit with a new one at no charge to the owner.

Toyota Prado 2005: Soft brakes
Answered by Graham Smith · 26 May 2011

We have been told that some softness is a characteristic of the Prado, and despite this uncertain feeling the brakes do work and stop the car effectively. We have also been told that there is an issue with the brake master cylinder and Toyota has been replacing them under warranty. I would suggest you quiz your dealer about the master cylinder issue and request that he checks yours.

Toyota Prado 2005: Cracked door
Answered by Graham Smith · 24 May 2012

Given that this is the second such failure on your car and Toyota coughed up for the first one I think you are on solid grounds for a claim against the company. As you have tried the consumer affairs route and that has failed I would consult a lawyer and consider taking the company to court.

Toyota RAV4 2011: Unintended acceleration
Answered by Graham Smith · 09 Nov 2012

Toyota recalled the RAV4 twice in the US for "unintended acceleration" problems, which sounds uncannily like your problem. The first recall was, the company claimed, because the carpet could move forward and over the accelerator, the second was because the accelerator pedal could "stick". There was also some suspicion that there was also a problem with the 'fly-by-wire' throttle, but nothing has been found on that front. I would urge you to report the problem to Toyota directly and ask that they inspect your car.
