TYRE makers vary their designs over time. Damaging one tyre and seeking a replacement sometimes means you cannot get the exact tyre. Can I run similar tyres, but with different tread patterns?

Feeling deflated

I RECENTLY replaced the front tyres on my 2003 Mitsubishi KJ Verada AWD because of unusual wear on the outer edges of both. The tyre retailer claimed the wear was caused by under-inflation. I regularly check the pressure and run the tyres at the maker's recommended pressures of 29psi front and 26psi rear. The retailer said I should inflate them to 32psi front and rear. Who do I believe? Given that tyre gauges at service stations can be inaccurate, what is the best way to ensure a tyre gauge is telling the truth?

Small spare tyre ok

LAST year we bought a VZ Commodore Lumina which has 17-inch alloy wheels and a 15-inch steel spare. The dealer told us the spare was for temporary use only while the other was being repaired or replaced. What concerns us is the damage likely to be caused to the suspension while doing this. We have since replaced both the wheel and tyre at a cost of $597. I think Holden should reimburse this cost. What do you think?

Tyred and emotional

I TOOK my 2003 Mazda6 to a Bridgestone retailer to get a puncture repaired, but was told by the fitter he wouldn't repair it because it wasn't roadworthy. The car has done 40,000km since new and three of the original Bridgestone Potenzas needed to be replaced. I am a careful, steady driver, not a speed merchant, and expect far more than 40,000km from tyres. Bridgestone told me it was normal to get 30,000-40,000km from tyres. I find that unacceptable and urge Mazda to do something about it.

Body determines noise

I AM buying a new Mazda 3 and asked about road noise. The dealer says Mazda is testing different tyres, but the noise occurs only on the hatch because of the cavity under the rear load area. I've ordered a sedan.

Which tyre is best?

MY 2000 Mazda 626 Classic Hatch has done 72,000km and is still on the original set of Bridgestone Taranza 195/60 R15 tyres. But I will be replacing these in the next two months. I have been getting quotes for the Taranza ER592 with Donut Technology, mainly because of the performance I have had from the previous set. I have also had quotes for the Hankook K406 195/60 R15, but I do not know much about them. The Bridgestone is $37 dearer than the Hankook. Which one should I select?

I OWN a 2000 Ford Falcon Forte wagon that has been fitted with Goodyear Eagle NCT5 tyres. They've done only 30,000km, but are very noisy, particularly on the highway. Is there another brand that would be quieter?

Noisy three

WE BOUGHT a new Mazda3 in February and have become concerned about the level of tyre noise, particularly when travelling on highways. Our car is fitted with Yokohama ASPEC tyres. Would fitting a softer tyre, or perhaps lowering the inflation pressure, help?
