Car Servicing

I think my mechanic broke my car
By Graham Smith · 20 Apr 2018

When I took my 2010 Nissan Murano to a local Nissan dealer for a for a regular 80,000 km service I was told that the transfer case was cracked and it would cost $5300 to replace it with a new one, or $2600 with a second hand one. We never had any oil leaks or any other problems with the car until this service, but they are trying to convince us that it has been leaking for a long time.

I suspect it was broken at the service. Is there anything I can do? This is so disappointing.

The crack is immediately next to the drainage fitting. It looks like it has been cracked when tightened up. My car is not driveable any more since the service yesterday as oil is leaking out very quickly.

My car keeps overheating. What's wrong?
By Graham Smith · 20 Apr 2018

Relatives have been given us a 2002 Holden Astra Equipe for my daughter. It has extremely low km, just 68,000.

There seems to be problem with the engine heating too quickly. I was in the car driving only for five minutes and the temp gauge rose quickly to halfway. It also cuts out when you are driving, obviously getting too hot.

Any ideas? RACQ roadside assistance said it could be a thermostat problem or a cooling issue.

Tacho issues with a 2003 Mazda Tribute
By Graham Smith · 20 Apr 2018

I have a problem with my 2003 Mazda Tribute.

When you are driving along the speedo and tacho go right to the max and then to zero, then back to normal. There’s also a problem when it gets to around a quarter of tank it starts to jerk and have no power, but when you pull over and turn car off then back on it goes back to normal. I went to a mechanic and he said the fuel problem sound like the fuel filter needs changing.

Does anyone have any help for me?

Noisy windscreen wipers on a 2016 Mini Cooper
By Graham Smith · 20 Apr 2018

I'm hoping you can assist me with an ongoing issue I've been having with my windscreen wipers on a 2016 Mini Cooper JCW.

I purchased the car in July last year as a 'dealer used' car, however it still has the new car warranty in place until December 2018. For the last six months I've been having issues with the windscreen wipers rubbing/bouncing along the windscreen when in use.

This has become a very frustrating issue and I've have not been able to revolve it. I first tried swapping the rubber wiper blade inserts but this was unsuccessful in fixing it. I then had the car checked at the Mini dealership in December 2017, however they only gave the windscreen and blades a good clean, and the issue continued. Then on April 4, 2018 I took my car back to the dealer again, this time showing them footage of the issue. They informed me that they had "readjusted the arms and cleaned the windscreen" and that everything was "ok".

However, the issue continues to persist. When the windscreen washer fluid is squirted onto the windscreen it reduces the rubbing and noise for a number of minutes until it starts again, it's when just plain water is on the windscreen that the issue is most obvious. I'm really hoping you can provide me with some guidance on how to resolve this issue, as the dealership appears incapable of fixing the issue. In my frustration with the dealership I'm considering taking the car to a local mechanic that worked on my previously owned car and seeing if he can fix the issue.

Even though I've still got the new car warranty until December 2018.

My car keeps stalling
By Graham Smith · 20 Apr 2018

My 2014 Isuzu D-Max recently started to stall when it's almost to a stop.

I've cleaned the injectors, PCV and fuel pressure sensor, which has slightly helped. It still stalls but not regularly.

Can you give me some advice please?

Fourth gear problems with 2011 Ford Ranger
By Graham Smith · 20 Apr 2018

I have a 2010/11 Ford Ranger manual model and I’m having trouble getting it into fourth gear. I tow a trailer regularly and recently had it serviced and found that the oil was a little low in the gearbox, about half the amount there should have been.

Can I try something like an additive before I go to a gearbox specialist?
