VW Group seems to occupy every niche, as the sporty plug-in hybrid EV Cupra Leon VZe demonstrates. Based on the Golf GTE but with a totally different look and feel, the Mazda3-sized, Spanish-made Leon VZe combines an electric motor and a small turbo-petrol engine for limited pure-EV driving around town, or stirring performance out on the open road. But it's expensive and ergonomically flawed.

The Cupra Born is the first affordable VW Group electric vehicle in Australia, giving the Spanish brand a big leg up, while providing strong competition against other EVs with value pricing and 500km-plus range availability. Uniquely, the Born is also billed as our first EV hot-hatch, with performance and handling to match. It might be the most compelling VW Group product in years.
