Usually Dad's old car had a lot more sentimental value to him than collector value for anyone else. Sometimes, though, the old car can be a real gem, even if it's in the rough. A local man who owned several collectible cars had passed, and a family friend was trying to help sell them.
Amongst the collection was a largely original 1970 Plymouth Road Runner convertible with a 440 Six-Barrel V8 and four-speed manual. Part of the build sheet found in the rear seat springs confirms the car's VIN – it’s all spot on.
Plymouth made only 658 convertible Road Runners in 1970. Just 34 had the big 440-6BBL engine, and only 20 with four-speeds. If you drill down far enough, given the number and type of options on this car, it is likely a one-of-one. This car was painted red over the original blue – however, traces of the paintwork can still be seen under the peeling top coat. The car was last registered in 1985 and has been parked for the best part of 30 years, covered with junk in the garage.
The car was sold to a Mopar collector who is looking to get the car back to its former glory, it will eventually be back in the traffic where it belongs. So, the next time someone asks if you'd be interested in 'Dad's old car', check out their garage before making the decision, they might just have a rare bird just waiting to escape its dusty cage.
