Ford just killed the muscle car

By Iain KellyIain Kelly
  • The V8 muscle car is far from dead. The V8 muscle car is far from dead.
  • How much is too much power? How much is too much power?

Ford's 2020 Shelby GT500 Mustang is set to slay everything from General Motors and Chrysler.

The Blue Oval crow the top-dog pony car will be their fastest ever Mustang, packing an insane 760hp.

While the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Chevy's most powerful car, makes 563kW (755hp) the GT500 goes 4kW (5hp) better using a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 - that is one whole litre less than the 'Vette!

Dodge's Demon may have made up to 626kW (840hp), but the drag-focussed special edition wasn't a production car like the series-built Mustang, and Ford are promising the GT500 will do more than just straight line runs.

Ford has also hinted at a mid 3-second 0-100km/h time, and the ability to do the standing quarter in under 11-seconds. We have no idea how Chevy or Mopar could counter this kind of all-out performance warfare as the fastest Camaro makes 82kW (110hp) less than the GT500.

Has Ford just killed the modern muscle car wars? Maybe! Let us know what you think in the comments.
