The import tariff on Japanese and South Korean cars will be completely removed from January 15 - bringing potential price cuts to almost half of all cars imported into Australia.However, the industry has warned buyers not to expect massive savings - cuts will be most likely between $250 and $1000 - because the 5 per cent tariff was on the landed cost of the car, not the higher recommended retail price.Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Robb claims there will be savings of up to $7630 on some Toyotas as 'an example of the real impact that families will see from these agreements ... for Toyota's biggest-selling models".Don't get too excited. 'As new models arrive they may have additional equipment," he says.Hyundai will introduce extra equipment but the currency gap between the Korean won and the yen will make it more difficult to introduce significant savings. So far, Holden has also resisted price cuts on the Korean-made Captiva, Barina, Cruze wagon and Malibu.The Japanese Free Trade Agreement due to come into effect on January 15 follows the deal with South Korea from December 15.The deals are estimated to affect about 460,000 cars this year;. Toyota alone expects the changes will make about 100,000 of its cars cheaper.'Traditionally Toyota would have implemented the price reductions at the same time as the cuts to import duty start to apply," says Toyota sales and marketing chief Tony Cramb.'Instead, with the support of our dealers, Toyota has brought forward these price cuts to the start of the year." Three low-volume cars also will gain extra equipment.Some cars with Japanese and South Korean badges will have no new savings because they are made in countries such as Thailand (which signed free trade agreements with Australia in 2005), the US (agreements signed in 2010) or India (which has no agreement with Australia).Price cuts are expected on the Japanese-built Toyota Yaris, Prius and Corolla hatch, among other models. But prices will remain steady for the Corolla sedan and HiLux built from Thailand and the Kluger SUV manufactured in the US because of the existing deals.Mazda has trimmed prices on all Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5 and CX-9 vehicles, from $268 to $963 on vehicles which range in price from $20,000 to $50,000. But its cheapest car, the Mazda2, and the BT-50 ute will not get price cuts as they come from Thailand.Likewise most Hondas sold in Australia today come from Thailand. Meanwhile Subaru cut prices of some models by between $500 and $1000. The car industry has warned buyers that exchange rate fluctuations have had a bigger impact on prices than the tariff.'The Australian dollar has moved by 60 per cent over the past 10 years but car prices have remained relatively stable," says one industry insider.'Car makers ride the currency wave, plus you have the impact of the devalued Japanese yen. That has a bigger impact on (pricing) than the removal of the tariff."

December and January are already good times to drive a bargain as dealers clear 2014 stock and make way for cars built in 2015.But it could be an even better time to buy if the Australian dollar continues to weaken against the US dollar.Senior car company executives have told CarsGuide that if the Australian dollar drops below 80 US cents for any length of time then we may start to see price rises on certain models by about March or April next year.Not all car companies buy in US currency, and the Australian new-car market is still more closely tied to the exchange rate with the Japanese Yen (which has been accused of being artificially devalued by the Japanese government to boost exports) given that about half the new cars sold in Australia wear a Japanese badge.But brands such as Jeep and Chrysler, which have enjoyed massive sales growth in recent years on the back of sharp pricing, may be forced to raise prices.Likewise the US-sourced Toyota Kluger, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML which, despite their Japanese or German badges, are in fact made in the USA.So if you’re in the mood to treat yourself to a new car, buyers continue to have the upper hand with record low interest rates, overstocked dealers (the market is down 2 per cent yet the forecast was for another boom year) and, now, the prospect of price rises around the corner.

Toyota has rationalised the line-up for the new Kluger, with the SUV now available only in a seven-seat version across three trim levels. The Kluger kicks off with the GX for $40,990, followed by the $49,990 GX-L and the $63,990 Grande on the top shelf.Prices have shifted in both directions, with the entry level dropping $2200 from the previous cheapest seven-seater and the GXL coming down $1500, but the top-spec Grande asking $3355 more than the outgoing model, although Toyota says it gets more than $7000 worth of extra equipment.All models are powered by the carry-over 3.5-litre petrol V6 that develops 201kW at 6200rpm and 337Nm at 4700rpm, mated to a six-speed auto -- one cog up on the predecessor -- driving the front wheels as standard and all four wheels as a $4000 option across all trim levels.Toyota is claiming fuel economy of 10.2L/100km for the front-drive versions and 10.6L/100km for the all-paw, which are improvements of 7.2 per cent and 8.0 per cent respectively. Towing capacity remains 2000kg braked and 700kg unbraked.Toyota Australia had input into the electronic power steering and suspension set-up -- including a new double-wishbone rear, with localised rear spring rates and recalibrated dampers.DIMENSIONSThe Kluger has grown 80mm longer and 15mm wider, which Toyota says offers more cabin space and easier entry to reach the third row -- where shoulder room has increased by 110mm -- while the luggage area has also expanded 49 litres, to offer 529 litres with the third row folded and 1171 litres with the second row also dropped, pulling back to 195 litres if all seats are up.FEATURESThe GX standard list includes 6.1-inch screen infotainment system, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels and a comprehensive safety list with stability and traction control, hill start, and anti-skid brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution.The GXL gets all that plus leather-trimmed upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, premium steering wheel, three-zone climate control airconditioning, and roof rails.The Grande ups the alloy wheels to 19-inch, the headlights to projector LED clusters with automatic high beam, and the infotainment screen to 8-inch with satnav and digital radio. The battle between Australia’s ailing car manufacturers has spilled onto the showroom floor, with car giant Toyota literally circling its imported wagons to fill the void left by Ford’s factory closure. Toyota has begun importing the Kluger SUV from North America, taking advantage of a Free Trade Agreement that eliminates a 5 per cent tariff, in an attempt to take sales away from the Australian-made class-leader, the Ford Territory.The Ford Territory, which will cease production when Australia’s oldest car factory closes by the end of 2016, has led the family-sized SUV market for all but three of the past 10 years. The only vehicle that has ever managed to topple the Ford Territory is the Toyota Kluger.An imported Ford Territory replacement is still three years away, which is why Toyota is trying to claim the early ground in the lucrative seven-seater family wagon market. The new Kluger that arrives in local showrooms this week is the first Toyota sold in Australia to come from North America.But Toyota’s shift to sourcing the Kluger from a factory in Indiana to take advantage of the Free Trade Agreement may initially backfire, as the plant cannot ship enough cars because domestic demand is so strong. “We clearly see the Territory as a competitor,” said the executive director of Toyota Australia sales and marketing, Tony Cramb.However, Mr Cramb said the company would be “supply constrained” in the coming months as the factory ramps up right-hand-drive production. Toyota says the Kluger is important “because of the type of buyers it brings into its showrooms”.“One in five buyers is in their 30s, more than half are under the age of 45," said Mr Cramb. "We see a lot of families and a significant proportion of these couples have children in primary and secondary schools. It’s important because these buyers are younger than our average (buyer) age, and it’s important to make sure we have something for everyone.” Car companies target younger buyers because it means they can sell them more new vehicles as they age.The new Kluger range starts at $40,990 and all models come with seven seats, seven airbags, a rear camera and rear parking sensors. The middle of the range GXL is $49,990 and the top-of the range model costs $63,990 (an increase of $2500). All-wheel-drive adds $4000 to each model. A hybrid or a diesel version is not available and the company says there are no current plans to introduce them.A clever feature that was unveiled on the US version of the new Toyota Kluger -- which projects the driver’s voice to the audio speakers at the back -- is not available on Australian models. The seven seater four wheel drive will likely be named ‘Everest’. Like the Ranger ute it’s based on, it’s developed by Ford Australia, whose design, research and development capability is expected to continue operating locally beyond manufacturing close down in 2016.The Territory rear end on this production test mule disguises a shorter wheelbase than the Ranger, which should make the Everest more manoeuvrable and agile on and off road. Like its rival, the Holden Colorado 7, the Ford is expected to upgrade the Ranger’s leaf springs and drum brakes to a live axle coil suspension setup and rear disc brakes.This should make the ride more passenger friendly, with the possibility of Ford adopting an independent rear suspension setup also an option. This would make the development more costly, but would favour passenger comfort and handling on road.A passenger version of the previous generation Ford Ranger has been in production in Thailand for several years, carrying the Everest name in that local market. But this is the first time the Everest SUV, which will be assembled in Thailand, will feature a smaller wheelbase and the expected suspension, brake and cabin refinement and passenger safety updates to make the SUV a competitive product in the global Ford portfolio.Like the Ranger, the Everest will be sold in European, American and Asia-pacific countries. No details have been revealed about engine and powertrain options, but expect little or no change to Ford’s 147kW 3.2-litre 5 cylinder Turbo diesel unit and 6 speed manual and automatic transmissions for our market. Ford’s 110kW 2.2-litre Turbo diesel, and 122kW 2.5-litre petrol may also feature in overseas models, but both are unlikely to make it to Australian showrooms.Low range is almost certain to continue too, making the Everest the most off road capable passenger four wheel drive offered by Ford Australia since the late 80s Maverick. A rear wheel drive model may also be on the cards, lowering the entry level price for families who don’t need the extra off road capability.Expect the Everest to launch in the second half of 2014, when the new model will need to win over the hearts of families and off road enthusiasts alike. The segment is currently dominated by the Toyota Prado with over 1000 sales per month, but it’s the soft roaders like the Ford Territory, Toyota Kluger, Holden Captiva 7 and Hyundai Santa Fe that make up the majority of sales combined, making passenger accommodation an important success factor.However, it’s the other ute-based passenger SUVs that will feel the heat of increased rivalry, with the Holden Colorado 7, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Challenger squarely on Ford’s radar. Ford may gain some sales from Territory buyers too, once manufacturing of the local SUV stops in 2016. Territory’s likely replacement, the Ford Edge, is not available with a Diesel engine, meaning customers wishing to buy a diesel four wheel drive Ford will need to turn to the Everest.

Honda is banking on a taller body, seating for eight and a swag of new features to boost its new fifth-generation Odyssey people mover closer to the top of the Australian people mover segment.Honda Australia director Stephen Collins expects the more van-like model to be “right up top of the shopping list in this segement,” despite price increases of $3,890-$4700 across the two-grade lineup. Helping to justify the price rise is the availability of an eight seat layout for the first time and new features like powered sliding rear doors, a 7-inch multimedia screen, auto parking function, a 360 degree camera, blind-spot and cross traffic alerts and LED headlights.The new model rides on a marginally 30mm longer footprint with 70mm added to the wheelbase, but the packaging improvements are gained mainly from a significant 150mm increase in overall height. With sales expectations of a 160 unit monthly average, a 1920 unit annual figure would nearly double the 1001 examples of the fourth-generation Odyssey Honda sold in 2013.This would still be some way off the 2847 examples Kia sold of the segment-leading Grand Carnival in 2013, but sales of this model are likely to taper with an all-new version due toward the end of the year. Honda’s projection should topple the ageing and commercial-based Hyundai iMax that sold 1455 units last year, and comfortably retain its lead over the once-dominant Toyota Tarago that sold 960 units in 2013.Honda claims the Odyssey is most likely to be cross-shopped against seven-seat SUV’s like the Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Kluger, but their respective 12,668 and 4184 unit 2013 sales results are not likely to be significantly dented by the new Odyssey. M&M's Super Bowl adConfectionary brand M&M’s has also delivered a Super Bowl treat this week, with a new ad for the colourful button-shaped candies. Yellow – the peanut M&M character – is unknowingly taken captive by Russian underworld types, in the boot of an oh-so Russian baddie black S-Class Mercedes-Benz.

Toyota is aiming for catchy family fun with its 60-second Super Bowl, in which actor Terry Crews is piloting his new Highlander -- sold here as the Kluger -- along a remote highway, when he stops to help out after spotting a broken-down, brightly painted bus.Within seconds, his SUV is crammed with Muppets: Animal stuffing his drum kit into the cargo area and Dr Teeth hijacking the driver's seat to steer off into a series of adventures, all singing an annoyingly catchy jingle perfectly designed to stick itself limpet-like to the viewer's brain.Crews protests at first, but is won over by the Muppet mayhem, and by the time he returns home is shirtless and wearing his tie as a hippie headband. “There were singing vegetables! Get ready to see a whole lot more of actor Terry Crews than you ever bargained for. The latest teaser for Toyota's Super Bowl ad shows the sports star turned movie star without a shirt and demonstrating muscle control with his pecs in time to the cheesy jingle.The commercial is intended to showcase the family capabilities of the Toyota Highlander -- known as the Kluger here, and launching the latest version in a couple of weeks -- but while the Muppets will have strong resonance with some of the kids, there are possibly only a few families that will relate to Crews' shirtless twitching and the befeathered show dancers backing him up.
