MG's new Zeekr rival incoming
By Tom White · 10 Apr 2026
MG, the original Chinese-backed success story in Australia, has been on the back foot in the face of new rivals, but the brand isn’t staying still with the reveal of a range of new models for the Australian market shown at the Melbourne Motor Show. The Shanghai-based brand showed off several new modelss, including the much-hyped IM LS9 large hybrid SUV, which will go into battle against the Zeekr 8X and Denza B5 with its range-extender hybrid powertrain. The LS9 was launched under SAIC’s more premium IM brand in China last year, and features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with no connection to the wheels, acting as a range-extender for a large 65.9kWh battery pack which grants it a 308km electric driving range according to the more lenient CLTC standard. The large SUV also brings unprecedented levels of luxury for an MG-branded product with generous interior claddings, large screens, and three rows of seating (in a six-seat layout for the Chinese market). The brand will introduce a fully electric version of its U9 ute, which launched in 2025. Appearing previously in approval documents, the U9 EV will have a dual-motor powertrain producing 200kW at the front and 125kW at the rear, although torque figures are yet to be confirmed. If the U9 electric follows in the footsteps of the LDV e-Terron 9 available overseas, it will be equipped with a 102kWh battery granting it a 430km driving range.Importantly, it plots a 3500kg towing capacity, which is more than can be said for the EV utes currently available in the market, like the Toyota HiLux BEV and its 2000kg towing ability. The existing combustion U9, powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine, will also be offered in a new Black Edition trim level.Next, taking aim at the Tesla Model Y and newcomer rivals the Geely EX5 and GAC Aion V, is the S6 EV.It is essentially a scaled-up version of the S5 small SUV already on sale in Australia. The S6 moves into the mid-size SUV category, although maintains many of the same interior features as its smaller sibling,Right-hand drive specs as confirmed by the UK-market version of the car show a 77kWh battery pack with up to 530km of range in both rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive layouts. Also bolstering MG’s range of electric vehicles is an upgraded version of the rear-wheel drive MG4. Not to be confused with the just-launched MG Urban, which is in a lower price bracket in a front-wheel drive layout, the new facelifted MG4 will continue to cater to a slightly more premium and drive oriented audience, starting at $39,990 for the base Essence, and topping out at $47,990 for the returning XPower all-wheel drive version.Stylistically largely the same from the outside aside from new wheel and colour choices, the new MG4 will get a completely overhauled interior featuring a new 12.8-inch multimedia screen with wireless phone mirroring, a 10.25-inch driver display, as well as physical controls from the larger S5 SUV, new seat trims, and a more refined centre console treatment, with improved detailing throughout.Like the UK-market model, the new version dumps the entry-level 51kWh battery, with the base Essence now being a 64kWh proposition with an improved 452km WLTP driving range. It features a 140kW/350Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels, while the XPower features 150kW/250Nm on the front axle, and 170kW/350Nm on the rear axle it can sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds. With the same 64kWh battery pack, the XPower’s range is reduced to 405km.

The cars leading the EV boom in Australia
By Tim Gibson · 08 Apr 2026
Electric vehicle sales are booming in a way they never have before in Australia. Buyer options have increased significantly in 2026, with more affordable choices also appearing more regularly. There were 15839 electric vehicle sales for March in 2026, up from 8385 compared to this time last year, representing a near 89 per cent year-on-year growth. Established SUV players such as the Tesla Model Y lead the way with 2818 sales, along with the BYD Sealion 7 (1970). There are also some new competitors climbing up the sales charts, such as the Zeekr 7X performance SUV, which managed 679 registrations for March, having launched late last year. The Tesla Model 3 sedan (667) continues to be present among the top sellers despite its prolonged downturn. The SUV trend continues as Geely’s EX5 (606) and the Kia EV5 (587) are next on the list, before BYD’s presence resumes with the Atto 2 small SUV (572). Another new EV making an early impression is the Jaecoo J5, which launched at the start of this year and achieved 569 sales last month. The BYD Atto 1 (488) and Atto 2 (466) also make the list along with the Kia EV3 (461). Hatchbacks are proving popular amongst EV buyers as well. The MG4 (451) remains among the strongest selling EVs, as does the BYD Dolphin (373). The Toyota bZ4X is also experiencing an upturn to 447 sales for March and BYD is represented again with its Seal sedan (337) to round out the top 15. Top selling electric cars Australia March 2026

Cut-price new EV confirmed
By Dom Tripolone · 27 Mar 2026
MG is offering you more car for less. The Chinese brand has locked in prices for its new MG4 Urban, which is not to be confused with the MG4 hatchback. The MG4 Urban is notably bigger than the MG4 hatchback at 4395mm long, 1842mm wide and 1551mm tall with a 2750mm wheelbase. That puts it up against popular rivals such as the BYD Atto 3, Kia EV3 and Chery E5.Despite this, it comes in cheaper than the MG4 hatchback, at $31,990, drive-away, or about $4000 cheaper than the base MG4 hatchback. It is also significantly less than the BYD Atto 3's $39,990, before on-road costs, starting price. The reason according to former MG Australia boss Peter Ciao is the MG4 Urban is more of an all rounder and balances the drive experience with standard equipment, compared to the standard MG4 that has a greater focus on driving dynamics and engineering. So, expect plenty of glitz and glamour inside, but a dulled down drive experience. A big part of that is the switch from the MG4’s rear-wheel drive set-up to a more city-focused front-wheel drive layout. This switch to front-wheel drive allows for numerous cost saving methods such as the use of a less sophisticated torsion beam rear suspension and simpler packaging with less components and a lower weight. It will be available in two variants, with the standard range versions priced at $31,990 and the long range at $34,990 (both drive-away).At the heart of the Standard version is a 43kWh Lithium-Ferro-Phosphate (LFP) battery that delivers a driving range of 323km (WLTP), while the 54kWh battery bumps the range up to 415km.MG claims both versions can accept up to 150kW via a DC charger, which can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes.MG covers its vehicles with a conditional 10 year/250,000 warranty, which requires owners to service their vehicle with MG or it reverts to a seven-year/unlimited km guarantee. The MG4 Urban will land in dealerships next month.

This could be Australia's cheapest EV
By Tim Gibson · 19 Mar 2026
MG Australia has revealed more details of its MG4 Urban budget electric hatchback, and it could be one of Australia's cheapest EVs.The Urban will enter the Australian market as a closer competitor to other affordable EV offerings such as the BYD Atto 1, Dolphin and GWM Ora.It will also have to contend with the incoming Geely EX2, which is also speculated to launch with a sharp price point. There is still no news on price for the Urban, but it is expected to be a step down from the standard MG4, which starts from around $36,000 (drive-away) until the end of March 2026. The brand said it plans to offer pricing comparable to similar internal combustion vehicles. The petrol-powered MG3 hatch currently starts in the early $20K bracket, excluding current promotions, meaning the MG4 Urban could be priced around the same. It's unclear if it will undercut the current cheapest EV in Australia, the smaller BYD Atto 1 Essential that's priced from $23,990 before on-road costs. But it's likely to be closer to $30k than $20k.The anticipated budget-oriented price tag for the MG4 Urban could help MG reclaim sales in the electric hatch space from its previously cheaper rivals.Unlike the standard rear-wheel-drive MG4 currently on sale in Australia, the Urban is a front-wheel-drive only variant, but it is also noticeably bigger. The car gets the same battery as found in the United Kingdom spec models. The 43kWh battery has a driving range of 323km (WLTP), while the 54kWh battery bumps the range up to 415km.This sees it line up with the driving range available on the Dolphin and Ora, but it should be noted that both models of GWM's hatch get a larger 58kWh battery.Power output for the Australian version of the MG4 Urban is still to be revealed, but there are variants producing 109kW, 117kW and 120kW overseas. It will come with 17-inch alloy wheels as standard along with a full-width rear light bar. The brand said the car will offer a high level of practicality, including 382L of luggage space, with substantial rear legroom and headroom, even for tall rear passengers.

Big Chinese brand’s new model blitz
By Chris Thompson · 06 Mar 2026
MG is on the verge of its line-up almost doubling in the UK and Europe, which could be good news for the brand’s local variety.According to reports, MG plans to take its offerings from 10 models to 18 in the region soon, which also leaves the door open for new models from its quirky sub-brands. CEO of MG Motor UK & Europe William Wang told Automotive News Europe the plan to expand its line-up includes a large plug-in hybrid SUV and an “electric four-meter-long small car” which will reportedly rival the BYD Dolphin. In Australia, MG currently sells the HS, ZS, QS, and MG 5S SUVs, plus the MG3, MG4, MG5 and MG7 along with the sporty Cyberster and the IM5 and IM6 from its sub-brand, IM.If MG is to expand its Euro line-up to around 18 models as the report suggests, this could see six new models land here if they are to be built in right-hand drive. One of these is the locked-in MG S6 EV, set to join the smaller S5 EV which has already arrived.Similarly styled but closer in size to a mid-size SUV like the Tesla Model Y, the electric SUV could significantly undercut the popular American EV.Also just-spotted in China is an SUV spin-off of the upcoming MG4 Urban as a potential price-leading EV SUV to replace the position once held by the MG ZS EV in the brand's line-up.The IM luxury sub-brand which already has two cars here could expand into the SUV space, too, with the 2026 MG IM LS9 having been detailed for the brand’s home market earlier this year. The IM LS9 is a huge Volvo XC90 or BMW X7-sized SUV with luxury appointments and sleek styling, though unlike some of the other models here, it’s not locked-in for Australia just yet.Further down the track, a boxy off-road-style SUV could make the 2025 MG Cyber X concept a reality, something of a Land Rover Defender rival but at a likely lower price point. The Cyber X was revealed last year at the Shanghai Motor Show, and is expected to be part of an expanded range of models under an emerging Cyber sub-brand which kicked off with the Cyberster electric roadster in Australia last year.

New electric car price war emerging
By Tim Gibson · 29 Jan 2026
The MG4 Urban electric hatchback has just been priced in the United Kingdom, offering a new budget option in the EV space. It will start from £23,495 (about $46,000), but it is expected to be significantly cheaper when it comes to Australia, potentially around $30,000.This MG4 Urban differs from the MG4 hatch Australia currently gets, particularly as it is front-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive, but is also noticeably bigger. The Urban measures at 4395mm long as opposed to 4287mm with the MG4 hatch. The MG4 Urban will offer MG a more affordable and more direct competitor to other budget EV hatch rivals, lining up with front-wheel alternatives such as the BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora and the coming Geely EX2.With a current starting price of $36,990, before on-road costs, the current MG4 is more expensive than the Dolphin and the Ora, but this FWD Urban could close the gap.The MG4 was the ninth best-selling electric car in Australia in 2025, despite suffering a more than 50 per cent drop in sales year-on-year. We can expect the Urban to come to Aussie shores some time in 2026, but MG Australia did not state an official launch date when contacted for comment. "We do not speculate or comment on future models or product details. We are always evaluating and looking for different powertrain options across our line up - MG Motor Australia will update as models are formally confirmed," an MG Australia spokesperson said. The Urban features a neat interior, including a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and 7.0-inch digital driver display. In the UK, it comes with two single elector motor choices, producing 109kW and 117kW, respectively. It is expected Australia will get a different version of the car, which has a more powerful electric motor, producing 120kW and 250Nm. The UK variants either have a 43kWh battery, offering 323km of WLTP driving range or a 53.9kWh battery, extending the range to 415km.According to MG, the Urban’s battery can charge from 30 to 80 percent in 20 minutes.
