The MX-5 is a great little sports car for someone looking for some fun on the road.
The earliest ones are getting a little long in the tooth and are looking a little tired.
Go for an NC model, that's from 2005-on, and you shouldn't go wrong. They're reliable, user-friendly, they look good, and they're great fun to drive.
Look for a low-mileage example and avoid any that look like they might have been used in competition.
LIKE you, I haven't been able to find a source for a re-useable oil filter for an MX-5, but maybe a Carsguide reader could help? Another idea is to buy the filters in bulk as most suppliers offer a discount if you buy enough of them.
BOTH are well-built and will be reliable so I reckon it comes down to whether you fancy a coupe or convertible. The Celica is a stylish coupe, but the MX-5 is obviously a soft top. My choice is a Mazda, but that's because I like convertibles. Sit in each, make sure you're comfortable with the seats and the roominess, and take them for a drive to see if either fits your needs.
