Mazda is no stranger to motoring enigmas, but can the unique appeal of the electrified MX-30 help overcome its drawbacks?

The Mazda MX-30 E35 Astina is a quirky, comfortable, luxurious and dynamic SUV, but suffers in Australia for a lack of competitive range, non-subsidised high pricing and poor rear-seat packaging. Yet its real-world 200km between top-ups is sufficient for most, and you get to enjoy striking design, an opulent interior and lots of standard features, making this a flawed yet compelling premium EV.

Mazda has entered the market with a mild-hybrid version its new MX-30, but is it hybrid enough to win over climate conscious hearts? And does it even need to?

Mazda is offering the MX-30 coupe as an internal-combustion car before the EV arrives later in the year. Dripping with unique style, a terrific interior and a sadly underpowered engine, it's probably not as sporty as it thinks it is.

Thanks to focus on design and the environment, the MX-30 small SUV is arguably Mazda's most interesting new model in years. However, the eagerly anticipated electric version isn't here just yet. That said, the M Hybrid is, and as it turns out, it's a mild child that doesn't quite go far enough.

Mazda has launched its first EV, but we can't tell you what it's called, or indeed what it looks like, although we can tell you what it's like to drive. We flew to Norway to drive a prototype version, hidden under the skin of a Mazda CX-30, of the new EV the company will unveil at the Tokyo Motor Show. This is a big moment for Mazda.
