This could be anything form a broken or maladjusted gear selector lever or knob to a completely failed transmission. Along the way, the problem would be the torque converter, or even a case of low transmission fluid (that has escaped somehow).

But considering the reputation of these vehicles, you’d be wise to also consider an electronic problem as the cause here. A good workshop should be able to scan the vehicle to see if a fault code has been logged by the onboard computer. That’s the place to start, and then rule out other possibilities from there.

There are more Toyotas seen in the bush because they have a reputation for reliability. As a result there are many more dealerships around the bush, and mechanics are more familiar with fixing them when necessary, but should the Disco break down for some reason parts are only a phone call away in one of our capital cities or major towns. Checking the vehicle before going away on a trip is always a good idea, but that won’t necessarily mean it won’t break down.
