Stay on target
Answered by Graham Smith · 28 Apr 2005

IT REALLY is important to do the services at the specified intervals, either kilometres or time, whichever comes first. Fluids do deteriorate in time and need to be replaced to maintain their effectiveness. It's not only oil and filters, either, remember its important to change coolant and brake fluid at least annually.

Sonata worries
Answered by Graham Smith · 11 Feb 2005

THE problem with the remote central locking is not uncommon, but it seems little can be done. It's apparently related to the wiring. The Sonata is particularly prone to electrical gremlins. With the other problem, I'd take it to a suspension specialist and ask them to ensure the front-end alignment is set correctly. It may be worth fitting better-quality front dampers, something the specialist would be able to advise on.

Clutch of problems
Answered by Graham Smith · 17 Feb 2006

MY Hyundai contact tells me he has not experienced the clutch problem you have and says you would have to be riding the clutch hard to get that sort of wear. The clutch is generally regarded as a consumable item by most carmakers, but that presumes it wears out in a normal fashion. In your case, he reckons you should be pressing for it to be covered under warranty, and I agree. Unfortunately, there's not much choice but to replace it, so I would suggest you make it clear to the dealer and to Hyundai that you believe it is a warranty issue before it gets pulled apart, then be prepared to argue your case.

Thirsty hyundai
Answered by Graham Smith · 24 Dec 2004

THE Sonata uses regular unleaded, but some Hyundai mechanics suggest running PULP occasionally to aid clean running. For the flat spot, check that the spark plugs were changed at 90,000km as recommended. The Hyundai uses platinum-tipped plugs and, because the inlet manifold has to be removed to change plugs in the three rear cylinders, mechanics have been known to leave them. They should have been replaced at 90,000km. Also check the plug leads.

Sonata timing belt
Answered by Graham Smith · 14 Jul 2005

IT SOUNDS as if you have a bent valve. The Sonata engine has to be correctly aligned when the belt is changed and it's difficult to do. The other thing to check is the balance belt -- it should also be changed, and needs to be correctly aligned when the new cam timing belt is fitted. It's easy to get the balance belt 180 degrees out.
