THAT'S great news. It's the first clear indication there is a fix for what is a most frustrating problem.
The HK Monaro is one of the great classics, so it's worth quite a bit. It sounds as though it needs a full restoration, which could be expensive, but I think it could be worth between $40,000 and $60,000 in its current state.
REPLACING the lifters in the Gen III is a reasonably big job. The heads have to be removed and machined before they go back on. That's why the mechanic is suggesting that you do all lifters at the same time. It's likely to save you money in the long term. The quote, however, does seem a little steep. It probably should be more like $2000.
IT TOOK Holden some time to find out what was causing the batteries to flatten, but someone on the inside has assured us the problem has been fixed. We have a copy of a letter DL 63/09 sent to dealers on November 30 that sets out a checklist, which dealers can use when assessing a problem car, and revised software for instrument-panel cluster. That leads us to believe Holden is on top of the issue. It's hard to comment on why the airbags failed to deploy in your crash, but airbags generally deploy only in a very serious crash and the impact of yours might not have been enough to trigger them. You don't mention if you were injured, which suggests you were not.
FOR a stylish drive there's the VW Beetle cabriolet and the Mini cabriolet. Both look smart and are fun to drive, and you will be able to get them for about $40,000. Another way to go is to buy a coupe/convertible -- one that has a folding metal roof instead of a soft-top. That way you get the security and refinement of a coupe and the fun of a convertible. The VW Eos is a good one, as is the Holden Astra Twin-Top, but they will set you back about $50,000. For a sportier ride there is the Mazda MX-5 coupe/convertible, which is more fun but is only a two-seater. All those cars will be reliable and all represent good value.
The first time you brake the pads are cold. After that they have some heat in them and there is no problem. It's possibly a material issue, but it could be fixed by chamfering the leading edge of the pads. Contact Howard Reynolds of Race Brakes (ph: 9687 7222) for help.
THANKS Sam, and for anyone thinking of doing the conversion the information about the need to change the diff ratio is important to note. For readers in Victoria, we have been told the Castlemaine Rod Shop is able to do the conversion too.
HOLDEN recommended 91 RON regular unleaded for the SB Barina GSi, so it would run satisfactorily on E10. The main issues are regular servicing and hard driving.
