All were meant to be sure-fire hits. A roll-of-the-dice gamble, some involving extensive and hugely expensive re-engineering for our right-hand-drive (RHD) requirements, in return for the promise of strong sales and a healthy return on investment. Especially when most were fundamentally good cars.

While Holden fans might remember the name VinFast from its short-lived time with an engineering outpost in Australia - and ownership of the former Holden proving ground at Lang Lang - the brand’s plans in its home nation are far less short-lived. Its newest model, the VF3, is one of several electric cars in its line-up with the company hoping it becomes a ‘car of the people’ in Vietnam.
