China's GWM is set to launch a new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine option in the Prado-rivalling Tank 500 SUV in the second half of 2025. The electric car onslaught will continue in 2026 with the announcement of more than 20 new models in Australia.

GWM has admitted there is still plenty of work left to do to boost the popularity of its entry-level Cannon 4x2 and 4x4 range in Australia. Whilst recording a decent 19 per cent volume rise year-to-date, to just under 7000 units, on the back of a significant diesel engine and transmission upgrade earlier this year as part of 2025 facelift, the keenly-priced Chinese mid-sized ute is only in seventh spot.

GWM says it expects Ora to thrive in Australia over the next 12 to 24 months, with much-needed additional models and a broader choice of powertrain options that are more in-line with consumer preferences. With sales of the sole, ageing Ora hatchback electric vehicle (EV) that was launched back in 2022 down by about 40 per cent year-to-date, hopes are pinned on a pair of all-new SUVs.
