The Daewoo Matiz was launched in 1998 as a cheeky and compact city car designed to take on the urban jungle. Created by Italdesign’s Giorgetto Giugiaro, the five-door hatchback stood out with its bug-eyed headlights and rounded silhouette. It replaced the Daewoo Tico and was aimed at budget-conscious drivers seeking practicality in a pint-sized package.

Powered by a tiny 0.8-litre three-cylinder engine, the Matiz wasn’t about speed but excelled in fuel efficiency and manoeuvrability. Its surprisingly roomy interior and low running costs made it a hit in global markets. In Australia, it attracted first-time buyers and inner-city dwellers alike. Elsewhere, it was sold under different names, including the Chevrolet Spark and Pontiac Matiz.

The Matiz evolved through several generations before Daewoo’s brand was absorbed by General Motors. Though no longer sold new in Australia, the Matiz helped shape today’s affordable micro cars and still holds nostalgic value for many urban motorists.

The line-up currently starts at $2,310 for the Matiz (base) and ranges through to $4,070 for the range-topping Matiz (base).

Daewoo Matiz FAQs

Ask Smithy Xtra Matiz stalls when it's hot

I assume it’s stalling on start-up and not stalling once it’s up and going. I would be checking the cold enrichment system, which seems fine in cold conditions, but not doing the job on warmer days.

Daewoo dilemma

YOU are caught in a difficult situation not of your making. Daewoo has announced it is pulling out of Australia and that will make it hard when it comes to resolving problems. In the meantime, Holden is saying its dealers are taking responsibility for service and problem resolution. I'm sure that it will still be difficult to resolve problems like yours. I would suggest you persist in getting a satisfactory answer to your concerns, first with your dealer, then with Holden if you aren't satisfied. Phone Holden's customer assistance number, which you'll find in the telephone directory.
