Updated 2024 Tesla Model Y breaks cover

The Tesla Model Y has received a minor update in China, but will it come to Australia?

A refreshed Tesla Model Y has surfaced in China which could preview an expected update for the hot-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Australia.

However, Tesla Australia is yet to confirm these changes for the local market, and CarsGuide is still waiting for an official response from the brand.

Don’t expect the 2024 Model Y to feature as many changes as the facelifted Model 3 however, as it appears to retain the same exterior styling as before, save for updated wheels.

Inside, the new Model Y features a box-fresh fabric dashboard with interior ambient lighting.

For comparison, the facelifted Model 3, due to arrive in Australia January, sports a new look thanks to a revised bumper, and head- and tail-light designs.

The cabin of the 2024 Model 3 also ditches the indicator stalks and moves the drive-selector to the central floating touchscreen – a move that has proven controversial to online commentators.

But back to the Model Y in China, which has also received revisions to its driving range.

The base rear-drive Model Y has a nine-kilometre improvement to range to 554km, while the dual-motor Long Range variant jumps up 28km to 688km.

The updated Model Y features a box-fresh fabric dashboard with interior ambient lighting.

The Performance variant meanwhile, stays at 615km.

Australian models are tested under different criteria and are rated for 455km, 533km and 514km for the Model Y RWD, Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance respectively.

It is unclear why the range has jumped up, though it could be attributed to the wheel-design change that could be more aerodynamic than before.

Either way, a more significant update to the Tesla Model Y is expected in the near future to keep it in line with the refreshed Model 3.
