The wait to see the new Ford Ranger Raptor is almost over, with the brand today confirming the official unveil date – as well as releasing some tasty footage of a prototype barging its way through - and over - the Aussie bush.

Pencil 6pm, February 22, 2022 into your diaries, as that's when Ford will finally be pulling the camouflage off its new flagship ute, and dropping some more detail on just what to expect.

But one thing is pretty clear from the video's booming soundtrack, and that is that a petrol engine will be offered with the new Ford Ranger Raptor, and we even have some idea of what that engine will be.

We'll go into that in just a moment, but for now, take a minute to watch this bush-bashing beast go to work.

That doesn't sound like a diesel, right? In fact, it sounds a lot like we imagine the Bronco Raptor's 3.0-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo petrol V6 might sound. And that's good news for Aussie enthusiasts, with that engine's outputs set to exceed 298kW (though official numbers haven't been released).

Ford is still playing its cards close to its chest on the Ranger Raptor, and hasn't yet confirmed engine or fuel type for the new model, but given this model is being filmed in Australia, and shown to Australians, it would suggest this powertrain will be offered here.

Whether its offered exclusively as a petrol proposition remains to be seen. The 3.0-litre Power Stroke single-turbo diesel V6 instead, with 190kW/600Nm expected, might also be an option.

All will be revealed in mere weeks. So watch this space.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
