The students – who study an automotive certificate at the remote town's Western Cape College – will come to Townsville as guests of the FPR team, whose sponsors Orrcon Steel have donated both tickets and the use of the corporate hospitality suite on the Friday.

There's something of an alumni link between the college and the V8 Supercar race team, with driver Steve Richards' number 1 mechanic David Moris-Fontes being a previous graduate.

The success of the course has boosted its popularity – and its number of enrolments of both indigenous and non-indigenous students.

Due to their geographic isolation, the students have rarely seen the world outside their own community, except on television. This will be their first chance to see a V8 Supercar ‘in the metal’, with the race car being a far cry from the diesel 4WD vehicles – and occasional petrol passenger cars – they mainly work on.
