Skoda Australia has confirmed the introduction of a ‘130 Years Edition’ version of its Kamiq compact SUV aimed at putting a market share dent in volume category competitors like the Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, Nisan Qashqai, Toyota Corolla Cross & VW T-Roc.

Celebrating the company’s 130 year anniversary and based on the Select 85TSI specification, the new value-added variant is priced at $44,990, before on-road costs ($45,990 drive-away) and adds a host of extra included features.

First, the Select’s 1.0-litre (85kW/200Nm) three-cylinder engine is swapped out for the flagship Monte Carlo model’s 1.5-litre 110kW/250Nm four-cylinder. Then, active safety is enhanced with the addition of ‘Driving Profile Selection’, ‘Traffic Jam Assist’ and ‘Travel Assist’ (incorporating adaptive cruise control, adaptive lane assist and ‘Emergency Assist’).

New design 18-inch alloy wheels join leather and Alcantara-appointed seat trim (a first for the Kamiq in Australia) on the standard equipment list as well as a power driver’s seat (with electric lumbar support), front and rear floor mats, silver roof rails and window surrounds, tinted side and rear windows and a storage drawer under the passenger seat.

On the convenience front, a power tailgate is added as is a USB-C socket near the interior rear view mirror (for easy dashcam installation), ‘Park Assist’, Heated front and (outboard) rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a 12-volt outlet in the boot.

A 9.2-inch multimedia touchscreen is added (up from 8.25-inch) alongside wireless phone charging, a 10-inch digital instrument display and 10-speaker Canton audio.

Matrix LED headlights sit in the nose with LED ambient lighting in the cabin. And it wouldn’t be a Skoda without a host of thoughtful, practicality-focused additions including flip-out door edge protectors, new nets and storage pockets in the boot, a signature rubbish bin in the front door panel as well as tablet brackets and a removable storage box for rear seat passengers.

Four colours will be available at no additional cost - ‘Moon White Metallic’, ‘Graphite Grey Metallic’, ‘Race Blue Metallic’ and ‘Black Magic Pearlescent’, with ‘Phoenix Orange’ and ‘Velvet Red’ adding $770 to the price.

While the Kamiq 130 Years Edition is an $11K jump from the entry-grade Select ($33,990, before on-road costs) on paper it represents a compelling premium option next to the sporty Kamiq Monte Carlo ($43,890 BOC).

In announcing the new model Skoda Australia Product Manager Glenn Reid said, “We just tried to make the (Kamiq 130 Years Edition) something really special with a lot of extra gear.

“We’ve given customers another option, with availability of leather and Alcantara and other new specification you can’t currently get (in the Kamiq) like wireless charging, heated rear seats and additional ‘Simply Clever’ features,” he said.

The Skoda Kamiq 130 Years Edition is open to order now with first deliveries scheduled for November.

As a small boy James often sat on a lounge with three shoes in front of him, a ruler between the cushions, and a circular drinks tray in his hands. He would then play ‘drivings’, happily heading to destinations unknown for hours on end. He’s since owned many cars, raced a few, and driven (literally) thousands of them at all points of the globe. He’s steered around and across Australia multiple times, spent time as an advanced driving instructor, and had the opportunity to experience rare and valuable classics here and overseas. His time in motoring journalism has included stints at national and international titles including Motor, Wheels and TopGear, and when asked to nominate a career highlight, James says interviewing industry legend Gordon Murray, in the paddock at the 1989 Australian Formula One Grand Prix was amazing, especially as Murray waived away a hovering Ayrton Senna to complete the conversation. As Deputy Editor, James manages everything from sub-editing to back-end content while creating written and video product reviews.
