Volvo has changed the name of its first electric car from the mouthful that was XC40 Recharge Pure Electric to simply EX40 in Australia.

Now aligned with the EX30 and EX90, the 2025 Volvo EX40 also gets a bigger battery and a few extra standard features. The great news, though, is there’s no price increase to any trim.

That ought to help the newly-named EX40 compete against fresher rivals such as the BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA and Renault Megane E-Tech.

That means just like the MY24, the EX40 Ultra Single Motor Extended Range is $76,990 before on-road costs, while the Twin Motor Performance climbs to $81,990. There’s a new flagship Black Edition trim that gets a few visual changes.

Standard equipment for the family-sized SUV includes 20-inch alloy wheels, heated and power-adjustable front seats, panoramic sunroof, powerful 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and power tailgate.

A 9.0-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen is powered by an Android Automotive operating system with Google Maps and other downloadable apps, though Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone mirroring is available using a cable.

Loading up the base car, the MY25 EX40 gets different 20-inch alloy wheels, ‘Microtech’ upholstery, new interior trims, active LED headlights and a 360-degree camera.

The larger 82kWh battery (up from 69kWh) improves driving range from 435km to an impressive 520km from a full charge.

The Twin Motor retains all the same equipment but doubles the motor count, increasing power and torque from 185kW and 420Nm to 300kW/670Nm.

The EX40 Black Edition comes painted in Onyx Black only with unique 20-inch alloys and a mix of upmarket Suede and Microtech upholstery.

Volvo’s sleek, sloping-roofed EC40 coupe range has yet to be locked in, but it will get the larger battery and new name when it arrives in the first half of 2025.

The combustion and plug-in hybrid XC40 range name and features are unchanged.

The Swedish marque made an early commitment to go all-electric in Australia by 2026 and seems to be on track to hit that target thanks to a selection of new models.
