Images of the 2022 Suzuki S-Cross SX4 crossover have been exposed online, less than 10 days before the official global unveiling on November 25.

Showing up on Instagram by @suzukigarage, the changes are more of a restyle than an all-new generation effort, with different sheetmetal being the most obvious change, as seen in the sleek new nose (at last), reshaped window profile and smoothed out rear.

Much attention has also been paid to the 2022 S-Cross’ aesthetic details, such as headlight and grille treatments reminiscent of the Toyota RAV4-based Across offered in Europe, squared-off wheelarches and extended strip tail-lights that, collectively, soften the crossover’s look while giving it a larger yet well-proportioned stance – something the outgoing model lacked.

Updated powertrain choices and an overhauled interior are also likely to broaden the under-performing small SUV’s appeal against rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota C-HR, Haval Jolion and Kia Seltos.

While we won’t know exactly what is retained from the current S-Cross until the new model’s announcement, it appears that the front doors, door apertures, A-pillars, windscreen, roof panel and overall basic under-structure carry over from before.

Back on the engine front, we’ve already reported that a variation of the existing 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine will be introduced, adopting hybrid electrification to help keep those carbon emissions down. It is also probable that all-wheel as well as front-wheel drive versions will continue to be offered.

One area where the newcomer will definitely see advances is in the safety space, since it is expected to adopt the latest suite of driver-assist technology, including adaptive cruise control with stop/go and upgraded lane-keep systems.

At its 2013 unveiling, the current JY-generation S-Cross ushered in Suzuki’s new Global C platform also employed underneath the more-popular Suzuki Vitara small SUV. Since then, it underwent a controversial facelift in 2017, until production ceased in August.

It is likely that Australian-bound versions of the 2022 S-Cross will continue to be sourced out of Suzuki’s plant in Hungary rather than out of China or India, when sales commence sometime early in the new year.

With the S-Cross adopting a smoother and more urban appearance, it paves the way for the next-generation Vitara due sometime next year to become a bit more rugged and off-road like, as per its predecessors.

However, this is also set to be a heavy makeover rather than an all-out ground-up generational redesign, maintaining a development of the Suzuki Global C architecture.

Watch this space.

Byron started his motoring journalism career when he joined John Mellor in 1997 before becoming a freelance motoring writer two years later. He wrote for several motoring publications and was ABC Youth radio Triple J's "all things automotive" correspondent from 2001 to 2003. He rejoined John Mellor in early 2003 and has been with GoAutoMedia as a senior product and industry journalist ever since. With an eye for detail and a vast knowledge base of both new and used cars Byron lives and breathes motoring. His encyclopedic knowledge of cars was acquired from childhood by reading just about every issue of every car magazine ever to hit a newsstand in Australia. The child Byron was the consummate car spotter, devoured and collected anything written about cars that he could lay his hands on and by nine had driven more imaginary miles at the wheel of the family Ford Falcon in the driveway at home than many people drive in a lifetime. The teenage Byron filled in the agonising years leading up to getting his driver's license by reading the words of the leading motoring editors of the country and learning what they look for in a car and how to write it. In short, Byron loves cars and knows pretty much all there is to know about every vehicle released during his lifetime as well as most of the ones that were around before then.
