Ford's "baby Bronco" SUV appears to have leaked online courtesy of a cheeky snap captured at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas.

The image, published by off-road.com, was originally thought to be a sneak-peak at the brand's upcoming Bronco large SUV, but reports since have confirmed the picture is actually of Ford's Jeep Renegade-rivalling crossover that is due for launch in 2020.

"Dealers drove the 2019 Ranger in Las Vegas. They saw the new rear-wheel-drive Explorer, redesigned Escape, as-yet-unnamed 2020 battery electric vehicle, an unnamed small rugged SUV some call the baby Bronco, and the Mustang GT 500," reports of the meeting claimed.

The "baby Bronco" looks delightfully retro in the leaked snap, ditching the curves of most modern SUVs in favour of boxy lines, circular headlights and a blacked-out "FORD" grille.

Unfortunately, that's about all we know for now. But the small SUV, and it's bigger Bronco brother, will form a part of Ford's planned model overhaul by 2023, with the Blue Oval to add nine new nameplates in the next five years. Of those nine, seven will be pick-ups and SUVs.

While the bigger Bronco is an uncertain starter in Australia, where local executives fear it could clash with the popular Ranger, the smaller crossover - built on the Focus platform - is yet to be ruled in or out for our market.

Does the baby Bronco have the wood on the Jeep Renegade? Tell us in the comments below.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
