Mitsubishi hasn't been shy about what we can expect from the design of the next Triton dual-cab ute, nor even about what to expect in terms of electrification plans, but a reveal date hasn't been forthcoming - until now.

Thai auto magazine Headlight has published an article outlining what it expects from the next Triton, as well as the reveal date for the dual-cab as being late next month.

On July 26, 2023, according to the publication, Mitsubishi will unveil the next-gen rival to the likes of the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

While it's highly likely that the brand's XRT concept, pictured in camouflage, is almost exactly what the production version of the Triton will look like, it's not clear whether the brand will continue to use a version of the current diesel drivetrain, a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four, or (less likely) a new engine.

Koichi Namiki, Executive Officer of Product Strategy, told CarsGuide at an April media conference in Japan that an EV version of the Triton would likely be inevitable due to the possibility of government legislation.

"You can think of this as a version of the Triton," he said. "The name of this product is maybe not decided, but we can't produce so many different vehicles due to the size of the company."

"I think some point in the near future we have to have a BEV in Australia for sure. When? That's a difficult question," Namiki said.

He added that - despite Mitsubishi being a leader in the plug-in hybrid space in Australia - there wouldn't be much demand for a plug-in ute.

"PHEV? It's a possibility, but we consider the [full-size] battery may fit better into a pick-up truck."

"At this point we don't see a lot of demand for this kind of plug-in hybrid pick-up. Companies are enquiring about purely electric versions of these vehicles."
