Chery’s SUV offensive rolls on.

The Chinese carmaker is pumping out high-riding family wagons at an express pace via its Chery, Jaecoo and Omoda brands.

The Chery Tiggo X could be the next SUV to arrive, and the third seven-seat option in Chery’s local line-up, after it was approved for sale by the Australian Government regulator. Chery Australia said it is due in showrooms towards the end of the year.

Chery’s latest SUV appears to be a seven-seat version of the Tiggo 7 mid-size SUV or a shrunken version of the larger Tiggo 8, and puts it on a collision course with three-row versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail.

It brings the same styling updates as the recently upgraded Tiggo 7, but has a stretched wheelbase and dimensions to help accommodate families on a budget.

It also uses the 137kW/275Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive setup as found in the outgoing Tiggo 7.

The updated Tiggo 7 now uses a smaller 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor that makes 108kW and 210Nm and is paired to a six-speed dual-clutch auto.

That recent power update to the Tiggo 7 gives the incoming Tiggo X an even bigger point of difference to its smaller sibling.

It is heavily outgunned by the bigger Tiggo 8, which uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine to make 180kW and 375Nm

The Tiggo X measures 4697mm long, 1862mm wide, 1715mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2694mm, slotting in just under the Tiggo 8 large SUV.

This bodes well for an extremely sharp price tag that will likely land somewhere in the mid-$30,000 range, drive-away.

That puts the Tiggo X on target to be the cheapest seven-seat SUV in Australia. The deal would be sweetened even further thanks to Chery’s seven year/unlimited km warranty, and a capped-price servicing program and roadside assistance of the same length.

Buyers can expect a generous array of in-car tech with twin 12.3-inch screens — one for the multimedia and the other for the driver display — wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and lots of active driver aids.
