A sharp looking off-road-focused SUV has debuted in China.
Dubbed the Jetour Shanhai T1, it is a tough-looking plug-in hybrid four-wheel drive that is about the same size as a Toyota RAV4.
It has an electronic four-wheel-drive set-up and decent 27-degree approach and 25-degree departure angles, which means it can handle more than a dirt track.
The plug-in hybrid set-up consists of a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor and a big circa-27kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
Combined outputs are estimated to be about 450kW and fuel consumption is about 1.1L/100km according to the more lenient China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). It can drive up to 1400km on a single tank according to reports from CarNewsChina.
This puts its on a collision course with the GWM Tank 300 Hybrid and potentially the rumoured Toyota LandCruiser FJ.
It features cool chunky styling with a hint of the new Santa Fe in the front-end treatment, especially the pixel like headlights and lights that run along the grille.
Thick black cladding along the bottom of the car gives it a tough look and the flash alloy wheel gives it a bit of pop.
Inside, There are plenty of tech features, including a 15.6-inch central multimedia screen, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, wireless device charger and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
But will it come to Australia?
Jetour is Chery’s off-road-focused sub-brand and Chery launched in Australia in 2023 and is bringing its luxury-focused Jaecoo brand to Australia this year.
Chery Australia’s Managing Director, Lucas Harris, previously told CarsGuide it isn’t in their short term plans.
“Jetour is not in the plans at this stage. They’re cool-looking cars, but they’re not an international export at this point,” said Harris.
“There’s gotta be a business case.” he said of Chery’s expansive range of overseas offerings. “It’s not a cheap exercise to redevelop from left-hand drive to right-hand drive. We have to ask if it’s worthwhile."
