Best ute and van deals ahead of EOFY

For workers, there’s the Workmate dual-cab 4x4 diesel auto for $43,990.

June 30 nears, dealers sharpen prices, accountants look at the books — and tradies update their transport

June is the biggest month of the year for ute and van sales, as accountants across Australia tell tradies and small businesses to spend some money to lower their taxable income and claim some new deductions.

Meanwhile dealers are keen to close off their financial year on a high, so the prices become sharper.

The challenge is being able to take delivery on in-demand models. To be sure the dealer can deliver, sign the contract with a note nominating a delivery date, otherwise the deal is null and void and your deposit is refunded in full. Get someone senior at the dealership to countersign.

Here are the best buys Carsguide found.

Vans

If you need a small city runabout, there are several good options.

The Renault Kangoo starts at a low $21,990 drive-away for a five-speed manual 1.6-litre petrol. It has dual sliding doors, 650kg payload, aircon and Bluetooth. This month there is also a five year/200,000km warranty thrown in. Automatic is available at a steep $3000.

One blot: the base Kangoo only has two airbags. Side airbags (bringing the tally to four) are an optional extra.

The Volkswagen Caddy is $23,990 drive-away for a 1.2-litre turbo petrol with five-speed manual. Pay $29,990 drive-away for an auto (ouch!) but that comes with the 1.4-litre turbo petrol from the Golf. The Caddy has a three year/unlimited km warranty, and has had four airbags since November. But it has only one sliding door.

The Citroen Berlingo is the dearest of the littlies at $26,500 drive-away but it comes with a 1.6-litre turbo diesel with five-speed manual, rear-view camera, Apple Car Play and dual sliding doors. It has the least warranty coverage of the trio: three years/100,000km. And it only has one airbag, for the driver. Passenger and side airbags are optional.

Available in limited numbers, the pre-facelift Berlingo diesel (without rear camera or Apple CarPlay) is $23,990 drive-away.

Utes

At the affordable end of the ute market, the Mitsubishi Triton GLX+ remains the one to beat. On top of the standard fare of seven airbags, rear camera, alloy wheels and five-year factory warranty, Mitsubishi is including automatic transmission in the already-discounted $36,990 drive-away price. This is about $6000 off the full RRP.

The Mitsubishi Triton. The Mitsubishi Triton.

Incredibly, Toyota is discounting certain models in the HiLux range less than 12 months after the arrival of the first all-new model in 10 years.

The top-end HiLux SR5 accounts for more than half of double-cab 4WD demand but there are mega deals on the Workmate and SR models. They are distinguished by their black steel wheels but are far from bare-bones propositions.

The Workmate has a 2.4-litre turbo diesel (rather than the SR and SR5’s 2.8), vinyl flooring and grey bumpers but also gets seven airbags, rear camera, 3000kg towing and a 955kg payload (figures for auto model).

It costs $41,990 drive-away for a manual and $43,990 drive-away for an auto. Both are about $6000 off the full RRP. Metallic paint adds $550.

Step up to the HiLux SR dual-cab 4WD for $46,990 drive-away for a manual ($48,990 drive-away auto), both about $4300 off the full RRP.

Want to treat yourself? Mitsubishi’s top-of-the-range Triton Exceed automatic with the works is also worth a look at $46,990 drive-away, about $4000 off the full RRP.

The Triton may lack the HiLux’s street cred but at this price it represents the most metal and most equipment for the money in the ute class.
