The 2023 Subaru WRX STI is coming, and to whet your appetite, we have some cracking new renders that imagine what the Japanese brand's performance hero could, and should, look like.

The Subaru WRX STI is expected to follow on the heels of the regular WRX, which will land in Australia in first half of next year.

That model uses a turbocharged 2.4-litre engine that pumps out 202kW and 350Nm (up from 197kW and 350Nm), and features a stiffer chassis, sportier (auto) gearbox and other fun-focused equipment.

Critically, it also rides on a new platform – the SGP or Subaru Global Platform – which the brand says “significantly enhances the driving dynamics” thanks to its “highly rigid body and chassis” Also assisting in its AWD performance is its available centre differential and Variable Torque Distribution in auto models.

But the regular WRX is merely the beginning of Subaru's performance story, with the iconic STI model to follow, either later in 2022 or early 2023.

Subaru is yet to reveal official power outputs or specifics, but you can expect the numbers to climb significantly from those in the regular WRX.

Rumours abound across the internet, of course, with everything from the new STI unlocking extra grunt through electrification to the power and torque wicks simply being turned right up for the new model.

We do know – or think we know – that the new model will get a new engine, the turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer currently found in the US-only Ascent SUV. According to multiple reports from Japan the new engine is tipped to make as much as 295kW.

It's worth pointing out here that the current STI produces 221kW and 407Nm, so you can be the new model will comfortably beat those outputs.

Either way, the WRX STI is something to get excited about. And if it looks anything like these images, then we're right on board.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
