2022 SsangYong Musso to power up! More potent diesel engine coming to Korea's Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton rival: report

The Musso (pictured) was recently facelifted, but it missed out on the upgraded diesel engine of its Rexton sibling – until now.

SsangYong’s recently facelifted Musso yet will get an overdue engine upgrade as part of an update due next year, according to a new report.

A leaked internal document published by Autospy suggests the Musso will soon get a more potent version of its 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder, with peak power rising from 133kW to 148kW, and maximum torque jumping from 400/420Nm 441Nm.

As reported, the related Rexton large SUV got the same engine upgrade with its own recent facelift, but the Musso missed out around the same time for unknown reasons.

Seemingly, SsangYong is ready to restore balance to its body-on-frame model line-up, but it remains to be seen if the Musso will also get the Rexton’s new eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, as it might continue to stick with its current six-speed unit.

But the leak suggests the Musso is in line for other updates, including the introduction of speed-sensitive electric power steering, which will enable the fitment of lane-keep and steering assist for the first time.

Other new advanced driver-assist systems will include rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Distance Alert (SDA), which informs the driver of the time interval between their vehicle and the one in front, in order to maintain a safe stopping distance.

Additional Musso equipment will also expand to a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, heated rear seats and a redesigned overhead console, all of which are already found in the Rexton.

Stay tuned for the official reveal of the updated Musso, which should enter Australian showrooms in the near future. For reference, the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton rival is currently priced from $34,990 to $47,790 driveaway.
