2022 Ford Ranger: Here is when full Australian details including likely engines, timing, platform and more finally drop!

Set your alarms because the long wait to the reveal of the new-generation 2022 Ford Ranger is almost over.

Ford Australia has confirmed it will rip the covers off its hotly-anticipated and hugely crucial 2022 Ranger ute on November 24, streaming the unveiling on its Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Publishing a teaser image with the announcement, Ford has also officially confirmed the new Ranger will sport the C-shaped daytime running lights as seen on the not-for-Australia Maverick and F-150.

The picture corroborates the spy imagery from Thailand published last month, as well as CarsGuide-commissioned renderings of the new Ford ute.

As well as styling, the reveal of the new Ranger later this month should also confirm more details like powertrains, platform and Australian timing.

Current rumours indicate the ageing 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel and 3.2-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder engine will be discontinued in favour of a new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit – based on the Range Raptor’s engine.

While the Range Raptor uses two turbochargers to produce 157kW/500Nm, the new entry-level engine will feature just one turbo for around 130kW/420Nm.

This engine is expected to proliferate across most of the 2022 Ranger line-up, while the aforementioned bi-turbo version will be available in higher end grades like the XL, XLT, FX4 and Wildtrak.

As for the next Ranger Raptor, it is expected to be made available with a V6 engine, with customers opting for a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel or a 2.7-litre twin-turbo petrol.

The former is expected to output around 185kW/600Nm to easily outmuscle the existing Ranger Raptor, while the latter – borrowing its engine from the platform-sharing Bronco – will pack a 230kW/540Nm punch.

Either way, expect Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission to carryover, likely with updated software.

As for the platform, the new Ranger is expected to ride on an updated version of the existing T6 platform, which will be shared with the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok due to break cover next year.

It is likely the updates to platform were made with electrification in mind, as the next-gen Ranger is also expected to come with a plug-in hybrid version in the near future.

Regardless, Ford looks to have taken consumer feedback on board with the new Ranger, stating they “conducted more than 5000 interviews and worked with hundreds of pick-up owners, in dozens of workshops across the globe to find out how owners used their trucks, what they liked, what they wished it had and what experiences mattered the most to them”.

And it’s the customers Ford will need to win over, especially in Australia, as the Ranger accounts for 37,551 of their overall 54,269 sales in the first nine months of 2021 – or just under 70 per cent of its total volume.

After the reveal, Ford Australia will launch the new Ranger in 2022, with speculation pointing to a showroom arrival early next year.
