Tribute automatic noise

Asked by Rick Wijnholts

I am having problems with the auto transmission in my 2002 Mazda Tribute, which makes a grating noise when changing from third to top. I tried Mazda and they said that as it was old it needs a replacement, but it has only done 50,000 km. What do you think?

At such low mileage I would doubt that the transmission is shot, so before I replaced it I would consult an automatic transmission specialist and get their opinion. It could simply be that it needs servicing.
