Toyota Prado engine seized

When the engine in my 2004 Toyota Prado 3.0-litre turbo-diesel recently seized I was lucky enough to be very close to the Toyota dealership where I bought it. I took it in there because the oil light came on even though the oil level was correct. Because of a noise, not detected by me, in the engine the mechanic said I should not drive it further. The engine was removed and stripped down and found the balance shaft had seized in the block and had stripped drive gears, also stopping the oil pump. The motor was completely rebuilt. It had only done 126,104 km, had never been used for four-wheel driving, it was garaged, serviced and well looked after. I believe Toyota has known about problems with these engines as stated in your writings. I might add the dashboard is also badly cracked. What is your opinion please?

It would seem likely that the oil pickup has become blocked, starving the engine of oil. That's a problem with the turbo-diesel engine, caused by fuel leaking past the seal on the fuel injectors and contaminating the oil. The cracked dashboard is also a common problem. If you feel strongly about it you could approach Toyota with a request for a refund of the cost of repairs.
