The `bomb' dilemma

I HAVE just bought a 1987 Ford KC Laser TX3. It has done 220,000km and doesn't have a RWC and isn't registered. It has had only one owner and is stock standard. I paid $1100 for it and think it's a bargain. I was told when buying it that it would need work to meet RWC criteria. The handbrake doesn't work and there is a leak somewhere at the back, causing the spare wheel to sit in a puddle of water after it rains, other than that, it's a fairly clean car. There is a noise from the engine when the car is moving and when the accelerator is pushed hard that sounds like a rattle. What could this be? A friend says the CV joints are known to wear pretty easily, and that the wheel bearings might need to be fixed. What problems should I be looking for, and do you think it's a good deal? As the car is unregistered, I am not able to drive it to a mechanic to check it out, so how would I go about getting it to a mechanic? Is there some sort of pass you can buy?

GETTING it to a mechanic is easy. You can either get it towed there by tow truck, or you can get a permit from VicRoads that will allow you to drive it to and from your mechanic's premises. Buying a car unregistered and without a roadworthy certificate is always a gamble, unless you can have it checked by a mechanic or a body such as the RACV before you hand over the cash. Without a thorough check, one can't possibly know what you might have to do to make it roadworthy. In your case, with more than 200,000km on it, there is probably going to be lots, which could make your bargain buy look very expensive.
