Reversing lights on Jetta?

You've mentioned the strict lighting design rules all cars must meet. I couldn't figure out why I had trouble reversing at night until I found, soon after buying a 2009 VW Jetta TDI, that it had on the left side only one useless reversing light. On complaining to the dealer, I was told it complied with Australian Design Rules. I love the car but for night driving we to use my wife's Subaru XV. I have noticed more recent models have reversing lights on both sides.

The primary function of reversing lights is to warn the car behind not to floodlight the space behind your car for reversing.
