A few months ago my wife and I bought my daughter a 2003 Toyota RAV4 Cruiser automatic with 128,000 km on the clock, which had checked prior to purchase. About six weeks ago my daughter noticed the gearbox was having trouble shifting second to third. A Toyota dealer found an error code and stated that the only way out of the problem is to replace the gearbox at a cost of $2500; almost a quarter of the purchase price. Have you heard of any other RAV4 gearbox problems, if so has there been a remedy besides replacing the gearbox?
It's a problem with the engine/gearbox management computer and affected cars all over the world. We understand that Toyota redesigned the ECM to fix the problem, so go to a Toyota dealer and ask about a new ECM that has the fix. Don't replace it with another ECM of the same sort that it is currently in your car, that won't fix the problem.
