My 2010 Toyota Prado GXL turbo-diesel has developed a death rattle on start-up, but appears quieter when warmer. After checking it my dealer said that the number four injector was out with the rest. I was assured they were all perfect and all within specification and I have nothing to worry about. I find this hard to believe as the rattle persists. What do you think?
It's a common complaint and is related to the injectors Toyota uses. They have been replacing injectors, and that usually fixes the problem in the short term, but the noise comes back once the injectors wear. It's an annoying problem, but it's unlikely to cause anything more serious. If you are concerned about it, take it to a diesel engine specialist.
