Noise Makes Me Cringe

MY 2005 Holden Commodore SV6 is noisy on cold starts. It makes a clackety sound for a second or so, but makes me cringe. A mechanic could not confidently identify the fault, but suggested it could be a valve. It worries me, and I would like to have it fixed. Any ideas?
