Nissan Navara D40: Differential failure

I too have had a problem with the diff in my D40 Nissan Navara. The rear diff started to whine at about 33,000 km the rear diff started to whine, which seems to be a regular problem if you tow regularly. To my Nissan dealer's credit, they had the diff repaired in four days and this was the week after Christmas. The diff was rebuilt using new bearings and I believe a new crown wheel and pinion, I believe by Trans Diff in Melbourne. I gather the rebuild is better than a total diff replacement using genuine Nissan parts. With the rebuild they use 'heavy duty bearings', which theory has it will last longer. With the total replacement you are getting the same lightweight product, which may fail again. In my case time will tell, but if it fails again I hope it's before the warranty runs out. I would hate to have paid for this repair myself. The reason I bought the D40 is because Nissan stated and heavily advertised its class leading 3000 kg towing capacity, but it doesn't look like their rear diffs are up to it!

Like you, I reckon the Nissan diffs aren't up to the job; we have had a number of readers contact us after having problems. The diff failure is one thing, but it's sometimes compounded by the dealer simply seeking to replace the failed diff with another factory one, instead of having it rebuilt as your dealer did. Replacement diffs obviously take time to procure, which leaves the owner out of wheels while waiting for it to arrive and be fitted.
