Re stop-start systems and concerns about wear on the starter motor and ring gear. There's an alternative - buying a car that does not use the starter motor to restart. One example is the latest Mazda 3, which uses the cylinder on the compression stroke to fire first and so turn over the engine. We have been using a Mazda3 for four months with no problems. It restarts instantly with little noise and no starter motor engaged. I believe other manufacturers use alternative methods to achieve the same outcome.
Clever indeed.
